Entering hold if Missed APPR Hold ACT?

Featured Replies

A bit of a puzzler this one. I took part in the excellent Innsbruck Fly-in hosted by Austrian vACC on Sunday, and as expected was placed into a hold over ELMEM at FL160. I was then directed to the RTT NDB for a further hold before commencing the approach. I pressed the EXIT NOW to leave ELMEM, on a direct track to RTT. Enroute to RTT, I pressed the HOLD button to set up the hold as required; however the active waypoint had changed to (INTC) and the hold page showed ACT HOLD RTTNB so I assumed that the aircraft would enter the hold as required. Wrong. The ACT HOLD was actually the missed approach part - even though I hadn't even commenced the approach, and despite trying to line select RTT to the LEGS page I couldn't get it to enter the hold, so I flew it in HDG SEL.

Any ideas? Temporary bug? I've gone through the manuals trying to see what I did wrong but just can't fathom it out. My hold in HDG SEL was fine, apart from increasing the workload before and during a difficult approach.

To be honest, it just sounds like it wasn't entered correctly.

You probably should have done NEXT HOLD and then entered the same fix name.

I pressed NEXT HOLD, but the active leg was (INTC), so I tried to up select RTT as the next waypoint after INTC but it wouldn't allow it, nor would it allow RTTNB. I also tried PPOS but it wouldn't allow that either - but I'm not sure why.

I've done quite a few enroute holdings, so I know how it works and how to set one up - but I've never left one hold to proceed to another hold at a waypoint which is also part of the published missed approach - this is why I wasn't sure if there was a different procedure, as there is nothing in the FCOM or FCTM about this particular situation. I was hoping for something a bit more constructive than 'probably done it wrong', but thanks anyway.

Yes - I have read it. Several times in fact. That's the problem - I've followed it to the letter and it wouldn't do what I wanted. Let me re-iterate. I wanted to enter a HOLD at RTT NDB, before commencing the approach. However, the published Missed Approach finishes with a Hold at RTT, so the issue is that the missed approach hold was already showing as Active, even though I hadn't even commenced the approach. I couldn't enter another hold at that position because it was already active at a later point in the flight plan. I tried to line select RTT into the HOLD>NEXT HOLD page, but it wouldn't accept it. Is this a limitation of the FMS software or something else, because it says in the FCOM that it should be possible to have two holds at one waypoint if one is part of a missed approach.
