February 1, 201313 yr I have AS 2012 and am quite happy with it. I also have a decent system overclocked to 4.0 ghz. 12 gig ram, and an overclocked NVIDIA GTX - 275 card. For the most part, I am getting around 30 fps., but when in fog or overcast, I drop to the low teens instantly. Are there any setting adjustments that will still keep the realism and also boost the frames? Thanks. Tom
February 1, 201313 yr I too have that happen with my system which is the same as yours except that I have 660Ti card with a 4 Ghz processor. I think with overcast clouds, it's just the nature of the beast when it bogs down the frame rates. FSX drops sometimes to around 17 fps when in heavy overcast conditions.
February 1, 201313 yr Are you using 4096x4096 cumulus clouds and high def water? This slowed my system although it is not as good as yours. I lowered the resolution of these clouds and didn't lose much visually, but gained a lot of fps. Will Reynolds Flight Sim Addict
February 1, 201313 yr Personally, I've found it's down to what AA you have set, more importantly what supersampling is being used. If I use anything above 2x supersampling my FPS take a nosedive with overcast clouds and with transparency supersampling off entirely there's a much smaller decrease in FPS. Luke Harvest
February 1, 201313 yr I saw this problem just a few days ago in wx where it was very cloudy and 1-2 sm visibility at the ramp. My frame rate (DX9) tanked to 17-20 fps. I had great success restoring 25-30fps by reducing the cloud layer count from 5 down to 3. Try it! Cheers Clark Janes
February 1, 201313 yr I'm using 1024 clouds with 2x Max water and cloud layers set to 3. The only time I really get frame rate issues is with heavy overcast conditions. I also have my 660Ti settings set to 8xS AA with 2x SGSS along with 8x AF. Like Noble wrote, the super sampling affects frame rates when in heavy clouds.
February 2, 201313 yr Author Thanks for all the ideas, guys. I'll try them out. I have NVIDIA Inspector. Is this where I set AA, AF, and SS? Also, how do I lower cloud res? Is this in AS2012? Thanks again. Tom P.S. I just checke my Inspector settings and I had AF at 16X so I changed it to 8X, AA is at 8XS (Combined 1X2 SS+4XMS), and Transparency Supersampling is OFF/Multisampling.
