February 5, 201313 yr I'm going to be upgrading my FSX hard drive in a few days. I intend for it to replace a drive that was exclusively for the FSX installation (i.e. no other programs are running on this drive). In fact, I'm planning on having the new drive keep the same drive letter and name- to hopefully keep network-mapped drives attached. Can I simply drag the FSX folder to the new drive,or will this prove problematic? February 5, 201313 yr Hmm I think I tried this before and it didnt turn out too well. I guess all you can do is try it and see what happens. Of course the best thing would be is a fresh new install but if you have a lot of add on's thats a lot of pain. Gil Hidalgo
February 5, 201313 yr Author Thank you for the reply... Yeah- which is why I'm keeping the drive name and letter the same. Basically I'm going from a small D:\ drive, to a solid state drive, which will now be the new D:\. I'm even going to name it FLIGHTSIM like the old one. I can't just fake my OS/FSX into thinking the drive magically got bigger? Again- the only folder that resides on my D:/ drive is FSX. February 5, 201313 yr Done 3 or 4 times and works fine. As long as you rename the new drive letter the same as the old one was. Then remove or rename the old one to a different lettered drive.. OS is another story.

February 5, 201313 yr Assuming you're using Windows 7, you might want to use the command line utility robocopy instead (it's part of the standard Windows 7 install). Using that, you get to retain the original file modification dates of the files you're copying to your new drive, as well as have the option to copy only the remaining files in case anything goes wrong and you have to start over. It's hardly essential, but you could give it a try.
February 5, 201313 yr As Thibault's OCD senses tingle, my CTD senses seem to get a fright of this idea. Knowing how unstable FSX notoriously is, I would recommend a fresh install. I know its not the most fun to be doing, especially if you have a lot of add-ons, but to save yourself a lot of potential, and to my mind, inevitable irritations.. go for the fresh install.
