Real Airbus A320 Pilot: Where MSFS falls down as a SIM
Everyone on the arrival is flying 250kts (if able), so sequencing usually isn't a problem (center will give you a speed way before, on the arrival to help out approach). We use VNAV to hit all the stepdowns to KOBEE (ILS 24R at LAX), but with a super localiser, the LOC/GS signals work a very far distance out. As a technique, I will "watch the needles" until I'm confident I'm getting a good signal, and then hook the airplane to the ILS. Then it's basically just a speed management game for me to solve, rather than multiple level offs and power adds/reductions. Saves gas.

Real Airbus A320 Pilot: Where MSFS falls down as a SIM
Maybe not 100nm, but KLAX. You'll get cleared for the ILS approach well advance of CRCUS or SEAVU, and LNAV it until you're confident with the beams- I usually "loc" them in around 40nm? Way before KOBEE. If you wait (too late) to select approach in the 757/767, the FMS will give you an excursion and you'll impede on traffic on the south side. This is in the real world, not sim (I have contacted sayintentions however to see if they can tweak their ATC to behave this way). I think navigraph are trying to get it right though.

Real Airbus A320 Pilot: Where MSFS falls down as a SIM
I’m the one that wrote the topic quoted on the navigraph forums. In FS2024 there is now the ability to define the service volume of radio aids- navigraph set the localizer out to 50NM. this is okay I guess, but in reality you can pick up the localizer (and an almost SOLID glodeslope) around 100nm out, while the aircraft is still on the arrival. It is fairly commonplace to be cleared for the ILS approach while still on the STAR, with the expectation you’ll switch to LOC tracking at some point while also honoring the step downs (almost always, hitting APCH and tracking the GS will be fine).

Laggy/delayed AAO start, unresponsive periods
Hi Lorby, I am trying to pin down the behavior when I initially start AAO in the cockpit, it takes several minutes before the program actually shows up (task bar and window)... and at times when I change assignments, the program will go unresponsive (but never crash). Was this due to some hardware I need to blacklist - or any other reasons?

Henrik Nielsen's Global AI Ship Traffic for MSFS
Does the V3 dowload include the great lakes traffic? I'm having trouble locating that- although it may be integrated into V3 of the ships now.

The new build for your proofreading..
I've never used pcpartpicker before, but it looks to be very helpful on viewing compatibilities... http://pcpartpicker.com/list/K4C3tJ My concerns: 6700k vs 6850k system... Originally, I went at this thinking, 6850k (Broadwell-E) is the latest, so get that. Luke and I were discussing gains, if any, of getting the 6850k (and resulting X99 motherboard). I'm not on a budget, but I'm also not looking to be that person that notices "oh look, I gained 3 FPS by paying twice as much!" Benchmarks concerning FSX/P3D are somewhat spotty for the 6850k, but very certain run well on 6700k. Here's a benchmark that puts the 6700k up to the newer broadwell chips, and there isn't much FPS difference. http://www.anandtech.com/show/10337/the-intel-broadwell-e-review-core-i7-6950x-6900k-6850k-and-6800k-tested-up-to-10-cores/8 The one thing that is on my mind- is that the extra cores are used for terrain/texture rendering, and could be very useful for smooth/stutter free operation. ----- M.2 SSD. The motherboard has a slot for an M.2, and so I thought that a 500GB samsung EVO would take the place of the main C:/. I'm just worried that the chip won't fit, or the header isn't the right format. There's PCIE Gen 3 x4, (does that mean it goes in a PCI slot?), U.2 (does that not fit in the M.2 slot?) and the various sizes. I'm kind of taking a chance I think. EDIT: It looks like the M.2 I've selected http://pcpartpicker.com/product/VrH48d/samsung-internal-hard-drive-mzn5e500bw Is not a fast "32Gb/s!" module... I don't know why though. NickN writes on simforums... "The primary difference is the DDR4 support and differences with cores and lanes To be quite honest I see no reason to sink the money into the platform yet. DDR3 with a higher CPU clock still wins. That may change down the road and probably will but right now CPU speed is still king so designing a system with good high speed DDR3 with the intent of clocking to 4.4-4.5 would be the faster system for FSX Unless you use the system whereby the software takes advantage of the new Intel instructions and the extended features the 59X series allows, which FSX wont, moving into that processor may actually be a hindrance if you are unable to achieve a high enough clock Now I will say this, given the 10-15% increase in efficiency if you can obtain a clock in the range of 4.3 with the platform and assuming the memory isn't dog slow due to timing, it could be better but in my mind marginal at best. This time period is not quite right for jumping ship from one to the other. That probably wont come for another year or so..." ----------------------------------------- This argument supports the 6700k with its high base clock speeds, rather than "I hope I can overclock a Broadwell 6850k to 4.2"

Splitting Hairs? 6850k vs 5930k
bjratchf replied to bjratchf's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcThanks... And sorry for the back and forth... I really thought I was set with 6850k, planning on overclocking with a corsair H100, to about 4.2GHz, which is what I see out there after searches and review reading. Then I think of the purpose- the only taxing thing this computer will be doing is P3D/FSX- I don't compile code, edit video, do serious graphics work etc. And P3D FSX seem to do best on what simply is the fastest clock. So for the double price of the 6850k, it may not be worth it. I wish there were some "previous adopters" of the 6850k that could chime in- but seeing many many 6700k happy simmers could be a good thing too.

Splitting Hairs? 6850k vs 5930k
bjratchf replied to bjratchf's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcThanks Luke... So Broadwell is the latest, but they seem to have scaled back on the CPU speeds- A 6800k now gets 3.5Ghz instead of the 4.0 of the 6700k. Is the general consensus that the 6700k is still the best for FSX/P3D- that the additional cores don't offset the loss in GHz (and additional heat to overclock a stubborn Broadwell-E)?

bjratchf replied to bjratchf's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcand the question is, is it all really worth it for single-GPU gaming, on a native resolution monitor.

New M.2 Drives
Browsing through the SSDs to get for the new build, I'm seeing there are these M.2 drives- and consequently the ASRock x99 Extreme6 has an M.2 slot. My question concerns my research: Popping this Samsung http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2W03H16430 Into the ASrock... is it possible? I was told to look for the size (2280 etc), as well as the type of connector- but I have yet to find info for either to make sure they are compatible. I intend to use it as an OS/FSX drive, with a separate SSD for storage.

Splitting Hairs? 6850k vs 5930k
In some discussion with Rob A, I'm trying to narrow down which CPU to use in my new build. Keep in mind there's only going to be P3D and FSX as the major players on my machine. Rob made the good point that 6700k wastes space with an on-chip graphics processor, and the LGA 2011-v3 processors have 15mb of L3 cache. The 5930k has 6 cores, and compared to the 6700k- the additional cores are helpful if you use 3rd party programs on the same machine. I thought I was set on the 5930K- but now I'm seeing that there's a 6850k? 5930K L3: 15mb L2: 6x 256 Clock: 3.5 - 3.7 (turbo) 6 Cores 6850K 3.6 -3.8 (turbo) 6 Cores L3: 15mb This machine will be paired with a GTX -1080 and the CPU will be cooled with Corsair H100i V2 water system, for a moderate overclock. 6700K seems to be the most widely used however, and everyone seems happy- these two processors seem to be out in uncharted territory, but still within my budget. I'm just wondering if they're really worth it and will provide the smooth fidelity in P3D/FSX. I've searched and there's not much out there concerning these two chips. My hangups have been that the 5930k is 2014 technology... the 6700k is the "latest" along with the 6850 being released in 2016.

Is this case mostly hype?
bjratchf replied to bjratchf's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcThanks for the tips. I've taken a closer look at the H440 - The power module vents out the bottom, and is insulated from the rest of the machine... - It has room for a GTX 1080, - H110 water cooling will fit the dual fan inside the case The case fits into my desk area designed for the computer.
