February 5, 201313 yr Hi AVsim Community! I am new here to this forum, and am looking forward to my stay. The first topic i wanted to post was a question regarding the distance of flights on FSX. By distance, i understand that the distance between locations is real, what i really mean to ask is the following question/scenario; - Last year (2012), in March, i left Sydney, Australia to head over seas for the first time in my life. I was off to Wrestlemania in Miami, but obviously you can't travel from Sydney straight to Miami, you MUST stop first, and we stopped in Los Angeles, and then we had to stop again, in Detroit. Does this occur on FSX? If i choose the route: Sydney to Miami - will it automatically re-direct me to Los Angeles, or will it just take me to Miami, FL? I'm only 2 weeks into my flying experience on FSX, so i'm still sticking to flying around Australia for now to get more landing/take off experience before i do this long recreated holiday flight, but i just wanted to know how the long distance flights work. Thankyou!
February 5, 201313 yr Hello! Welcome to Avsim and this wonderful hobby! You are the captain, and you decide where the plane goes. If you make a route from Sydney to Miami it will go from Sydney to Miami, nothing in the flight simulator will redirect your flight anywhere else without you making the decision to do so. If your plane can make the flight from Sydney to Miami is another issue, if it can't hold enough fuel you obviously shouldn't be trying to make the flight! Obviously in real life there are plenty of regulations which would affect such a flight, but the only real limitation of flight length is the amount of fuel the aircraft can carry. Thankyou Iv'e been playing with Unlimited Fuel, but i think it's time to change that and play realistically! Thanks!!

Think of it as learning rather than "play" and you'll get a lot more out of the experience. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
February 6, 201313 yr The accuracy of fuel consumption rates depends on the quality of the aircraft. Payware aircraft by reputable developers such as PMDG possess fuel consumption rates based on real-world performance tables, often provided by the original manufacturer (e.g., Boeing). Another significant factor is wind. High-altitude winds are usually much stronger than ground winds are, and, over a long-haul flight, can drastically alter the flight duration and fuel required.
