1997 - Virgin A340 landing in Heathrow

Featured Replies

Only came across this by sheer coincidence...tried to look at the reasons behind this incident but nothing really concrete.

Would anybody have some details? Fantastic show of control by the crew and controlability at very slow speed by the aircraft! I believe it was repaired and went back into service.

Hi Will,

The Wiki article on Virgin Atlantic mentions the accident and provides a link to the AAIB accident investigation report

http://www.aaib.gov.uk/publications/formal_reports/4_2000__g_vsky.cfm

The report states that the plane landed with the left main landing gear partially extended and explains that the gear was actually damaged during retraction after take off at LAX a few hours earlier.

Fortunately, the accident caused only minor injuries to seven persons (2 crew and 5 passengers) during the post landing evacuation.

Hope this helps,

Bruno

I guess incidents such as this is why there will never be totally pilotless passenger aircraft.
