March 27, 201313 yr Thread is a waste. RSR all but said that within 5 years we will no longer worrying about the 32bit/OOM issues we have now. That was practically in the same sentence when he said Microsoft leaving flight sim was probably the best thing that could happen. Now mind you this was when the interviewer asked him about any knowledge of any new sim on the horizon. So sit back and relax and wait for that not yet announced all new 64bit sim that will be out in a few years. Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Eric

March 27, 201313 yr 32-38 person development team for 2-3 years to reach FSX Acceleration feature set +64bit and full DX11 support -- no one is even close to that size in resources -- as much as I would like to believe in magic, that's not going to happen with current development teams in the 4-8 person range. As much as I want to see P3D expand and XP expand, they appear to not have the same kinda funding that Microsoft provided to the Aces crew over the many many many years of evolution of development of Flight simulators.
March 27, 201313 yr no one is even close to that size in resources -- as much as I would like to believe in magic, that's not going to happen with current development teams in the 4-8 person range. Well, you know more than someone that in all likelihood (RSR) would know apparently. You have definitely stated is not going to happen because apparently you have the inside track on who is developing what, be it a known development group or an unknown one. Can you please enlighten all of us here as to how you obtained this all knowing knowledge? Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Eric
March 27, 201313 yr Dear virtual pilots! Let's not put other developers in a black corner, let them develop, they do it for us, they are trying to come out with better sims for us to enjoy! I had a hard time getting from FS9 to FSX, I have installed FSX and uninstalled it several times, there was something that kept me away from it, I wasn't prepared to switch sims because of the money that I had invested in FS9 (+500 euros for all add-ons ), not only the money but also the time to tweak it to look good and the time I have been searching for scenery's to fly all over the world. It was a joy FS9 for me, I was having the best looking simulator! A year back I decided that it was time to move to next level, so I've installed FSX again; oooo man, what a hideous look it had, all stock, no airports, no planes, no nothing, blurries everywhere and on top of that very bad performance 12-15 FPS!!! I said to myself "ok, let's see what we can do with this f***ing hideous sim". I've started again to buy planes, scenery's search for freeware airports, customs clouds, reading all over the place for tweaks (THANK YOU Word Not Allowed'S), O.C my PC. Now I can say that I'm so proud with what I've achieved that I wouldn't go back to FS9 ever!!!!! In conclusion, that is what could happen with other sims around, at first we all avoid them because we have a fear of new, this is how people react to new things in real life also, but in the end we all going to move to something that is superior to what we have at the moment. Remember that FSX is a 6-7 years old simulator and as FS98,FS2000, FS2002 and FS2004 it will have his end also!!! So let's stop compering other sims to FSX and wait to see what is happening, it could be magic....... Only time will tell! March 27, 201313 yr Don't think anyone is bashing the devs, I code myself and understand how long it takes for that process work. Have all the respect in the world for them. It's going to take time, and in the meantime FSX is gonna stay for a while. XPLANE (which by the way is 10 years old), is still missing alot for that time period. I do love the scenery for the areas that are populated and graphic-wise is the best I have seen. Once they fix the canned ATC and add complete world scenery, this would be my sim of choice. No doubt. March 27, 201313 yr You have definitely stated is not going to happen because apparently you have the inside track on who is developing what, be it a known development group or an unknown one. Where did I state that? I said nothing of the sort, I merely provided an estimate of resource allocations required to produce software that is up to FSX feature set and beyond FSX feature set with 64bit code path, multi-threaded, and DX11 with multi-GPU support. FSX today is an accumulation of 1000's of resources over a long period of time. I think it unrealistic to have expectations that small development teams like the LM crew or LR crew could produce the same level of functionality within the next 10 years. I'm just being pragmatic based on what I know about resource allocation and tasks ... sometimes I think people believe developers just hit a magic button and stuff is coded for them, flight dynamics created, SDK auto built, ATC systems pre-made, textures appear from nothing, and objects created automatically. I see a repeated posts from people that think it's "easy to do" in many threads (and it's not just specific to coding of flight simulators) by people that don't know what's involved. The amount of work in just producing nice textures that work in a 3D environment's emulated light sources takes considerable skill and understanding ... and that's just to do textures ... and there is a million other aspects of a simulated world to code. 3D shooters like Crysis took 3+ years to make with over 1000 people working on the project ... and that's primarily graphic candy, no flight models, no ATC, no aircraft systems, no ... anyway you get the picture. I don't know anything about RSR and I don't need to know anything about RSR. I just need to know how long it takes to produce software and I've been doing that for the past 30 years so I have a pretty good idea of what's needed (resources) as I've done (and do) the project management side as well as the programming side. Does this mean small teams of developers should stop development? Of course not! I wait and see, purchase their products as they go in support of their efforts. I don't view any of these 3 major products as something I need to "switch to" ... I use them all. I want to see flight simulations evolve, but until I see large development teams take on the task, I know that evolution is going to be long and slow, very slow. LM is a small team, LR is a small team ... google search and hunt and you'll be able to confirm that. If anyone is building a major flight simulation for end users that is "unknown", then I can only imagine such a company would want to stay unknown to avoid the comparison process and all the questions people will ask and all the pre-judgments that will be made. Phil Taylor was pretty open about FSX (to some degree) and it hasn't seemed to hurt the product, so it'll be interesting to see if "unknown" flight simulation are successful by staying "unknown" until release. Developers are humans, the same humans you see at the Grocery store, at the movies, at Star Trek conventions We're not aliens from space, the software development of today is light years more complex than it was when I started coding in 1980. I'm certainly not bashing FSX, P3D, or XP10 ... I use and enjoy them all along with their limits and quirks and missing features. I'm just being realistic in my expectations of what can be accomplished with small development teams. Rob.
