Boeing "Sonic Cruiser"

Featured Replies

While recently clearing up my old aviation magazines, I stumbled across this article published in 'Austrlaian Aviation' 12 years ago!

How the times have changed, after claiming there was no market interest, Boeing has now built the stretch 747, a radical shift from its 'Sonic Cruiser' development plan which was itself shelved some years later to make way for the 787 Dreamliner and we all know how that turned out!!

I have scanned the article below;

loving the look of that

If only, If only- I wish the world had not decided that super sonic airliners could be scrapped because of mere economy :lol:

Thunderbird 6 ... is that you?

It is basically a larger version of a Beechcraft Starship (which actually went into production):

One difference is the location of the rudders being on the wings edge and acting as wingtips for fuel efficiency as well

What are those spinning things at the back? Big difference, me thinks...

Only razzing ya, Matthew...

In a serious note, Boeing, Lockheed and NASA with DARPA are looking at supersonic flight again in an attempt to minimize the shockwave under the planes path. They are using computational fluid dynamics to shape the planes exterior to ease the shockwaves footprint and impact at ground level.

AviationWeek has had several articles on the program.

No worries mate....That was the other difference as well. The Starship was meant to be fuel efficient hence the TurboProps. Too bad it never really caught on and Beechcraft crushed most of them now as they were a lease only option (Kind of like GM's Electric Car Program).

Rutan is a rebel to most of the conventional thinking folks in avaition. He thinks outside the box. which I like.

Bone headed move by Beech. There were a couple of them that I would see fly over here. Miss that sound, you knew what was coming before you saw it visually.

Beechcraft Starship

Really like that plane also
