Fighter Escort to San Francisco

Recommended Posts

Yesterday, my friend and I were flying from Portland down to San Francisco when I later decided that I would escort myself to San Francisco. Sadly, I really did manage to do that.

Lined up on runway 10 right.

Pay no attention to the F-16 that's outside the right window.

F-16 is far out over there.

Here's the F-16 now.

Especially considering this is a company F-16.

Okay, THAT was dangerously close.

On the landing roll down runway 28 right.

Sadly, on the descent to San Francisco, the F-16 was being guided into San Francisco by the Boeing 747-400. Is that bad?

Good timing in the last image! How did you manage it?

Well, the F-16 made it to the ground before the 747 did, so it was just sitting there. The sad part is the 747 had to guide the F-16 in to San Francisco on the descent. Only way I managed that was through the TCAS on the 747.

Oh. I thought it was some sort of carefully timed autoland. Interesting, regardless.

no air-superiority (air cover) while the 747 landed? tsk tsk. you can really tell its a 'company pilot'

Yeah, no, I figured I wasn't going to be able to land both planes at the same time, so I sent the F-16 up ahead and landed it first. I ended up needing to do that anyway since I had no idea where I was going with the F-16 and actually had to use the 747's TCAS to guide the F-16 into San Francisco.

Well, the 747 didn't get any on take-off, either. The 747 took off first, then my friend sent his ERJ-145 up, and only after his departure did the F-16 get sent up.
