CTD for the first time since fresh install

Featured Replies

Yesterday, I had the very first CTD in the middle of a flight since I got my new PC 3 months ago. Usually I do 2-3 hrs flights across Europe in addons like NGX, BBS Airbus, PMDG MD-11, etc. Yesterday, I flew from LSGS to LSZG in the RA Legacy, over the Switzerland Pro X scenery. I was already something like 20 minutes into this flight, when the sim crashed. The log said, that the app crash has been caused by the ntdll.dll.

I should mention, that I did some pattern work in the Milviz F86 at LSGS before. I did not end FSX after that, but just the flight. Afterwards, I loaded the new flight with the default Cessna, made her cold and dark, and finally I switched to the Real Air Legacy. On T/O, I already noticed, that I had some floating autogen buildings around the airport, but I continued the flight. I just reached cruise altitude when FSX suddenly crashed. I haven't touched anything at this moment...

I also use Opus FSX for weather and MyTraffic X 2013 @ 21% traffic density.

The other setting within FSX are pretty much in the middle, mesh resolution is @ 5m.

My OS is Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit

My specs:

i5 3570K @ 4.4 GHz

16 GB CL9 RAM

GTX 670 2GB

all on a 480 GB SSD

Only tweak that has been done, is Boyotes FSX.cfg exchange.

What could have caused this?

Switching between add-on airplanes in the same session is asking for trouble.

One crash isn't enough information to draw a conclusion. Every now and then a queertron gets loose in even good stable systems. Take notes if it keeps happening, but one crash isn't worth wringing your hands.

What could have caused this?

You should download and run AppCrashView - http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/app_crash_view.html. This provides more detailed information regarding your crash. Just copy and paste the results here. The ntdll.dll CTD is difficult to find out the cause. But it is mostly related to memory. You want to make sure your memory settings in the BIOS are properly set (frequency/timings/voltage). The proper settings will be shown in the CPU-Z under the SPD tab. Look at the various JEDEC settings and make sure one of those settings is set in the BIOS for your memory.

Overheating has also caused this type of error. There's another program that monitors the health of your components called CPUID HWMonitor - http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html. HWMonitor is a hardware monitoring program that reads PC systems main health sensors : voltages, temperatures, and fans speed. It is different from CPU-Z.

You want to be sure you have Microsoft Visual C++ 2005, 2008, and 2010 installed. These programs are installed when you install FSX and FSX addons so they should be there but they need to be up-to-date. MSV's are not backward compatible so the 2010 version will not work for a program that uses the 2005 version. You also need to have the proper versions of Microsoft.net. You need versions 1.1 thru 4.5 and these versions should be located in C:\Windows\Microsoft.net\Framework\(the the versions). Since FSX is a 32 bit program, you need the x86 versions installed. These are not backward compatible either.

Best regards,

Jim

Thanks Michael for the report. I don't see a problem in it. You have the proper versions of MS Visual 2005, 2008, and 2010 installed. Other than what I mentioned in my earlier post (overheating, memory setup) I can't say what could possibly cause your crash(es).

I read your OP again and I saw that you change aircraft or locations without shutting down FSX and many developers and "experts" say this should never be done. You should always close FSX, restart and setup again. It would be easy to check by restarting FSX every time you make a change in location/aircraft. If no further crashes, that was the issue.

Best regards,

Jim

Okay, thanks for the help!

I already did the same flight again today in a freshly started FSX, and everything worked flawlessly...

Should I put the UIautomation.dll into my FSX root folder? Just to prevent?

Definitely. Otherwise it'll catch you sooner or later.

(It caught me months after setting up FSX. It caught me with the PMDG 744 I'd bought just before that freeze. I would blame PMDG for the issue; Ryan nearly banned me from the upcoming(???) release of their T7 for that ... no, i'm just kidding. But that UIautomation.dll caught me, when I didn't expect it to happen anymore.)

What happened to AVSIM

Read up on Virtual Address Space. FSX is 32-bit (the program), so can only ever use 4GB RAM. As you load FSX with add-ons into it, that VAS will get used up. The longer you fly, the more VAS used. Some claim there is no memory garbage collection along the way, that FSX's use of VAS is entirely cumulative; I find that kinda hard to believe. But reality is, no matter what your system, some combination of settings and add-ons WILL create an out of memory error at some point.

Just learn to scale things back to the optimal point on your system for the flight you are planning; consider it part of the flight planning, which is a big part of the fun of FSX anyways.

And as others have said, keep your configurations unique to each planned flight, or type of flight.

On my system for instance, I know I can't use the Carenado SR 22 to fly out of ORBX Vashon (2S1) and around Seattle to KSEA runway 34R unless I turn off all weather. Weird, but that's what works in that specific situation.
