Need help finding a PSU

Featured Replies

Hey guys!

I decided to upgrade my computer and have everything except the power supply. I am unsure exactly what to look for when it comes to PSU's. Currently I have a 500w PSU ( http://www.rocketfishproducts.com/products/computer-accessories/RF-500WPS2.html ) that I love (it has all sorts of connectors!) but I don't think that is enough for what I have now:

Asus P8P67-M PRO REV 3.0

i5-2500k (Want the option to OC)

GTX 560 1024MB

8GB (2x4) DDR3

2 HDD

I am on a tight budget as I already spent a little more than I wanted on the other components so I am not looking for the greatest and latest, just something that will do the job at a fair price. Also wanting to go with a modular set up.

EDIT: I came across this and would like some input about it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151031 I can get it for $65.

Thanks guys!

That psu would work, if you could find it. You want to be a little careful and stay away from the true budget psu's. They have the potential to fry all of that new hardware with a power surge. If you look in some of the previous posts, you can find some of the better psu's.

Seasonic have an excellent reputation, and would be deffinately worthwhile considering. As a word of caution high quality PSUs are being counterfeited and sold on ebay as genuine, so I would only buy one from a reputable supplier.

You cannot go far wrong with Seasonic PSUs. They have a good reputation of making rock solid PSUs. And if you can get it for $65, go for it as it will well cover you rated at 700W

I didn't know that! How would you feel about this one then: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Seasonic-M12-700-M12-SS-700W-ATX-EPS-Modular-80-Certified-Power-Supply-/321077062449

The seller is ok, has a reputable selling record.

I would seriously not consider buying a PSU from Ebay before first contacting the manufacturer and asking them what their policy is regarding honoring warrentys on goods purchased through Ebay and getting in writing (an email) that they would be OK with this. I know for a fact that CoolerMaster will not support any of their PSUs bought on Ebay because of the counterfeiting situation and wouldn't be suprised if other companies took the same stance.

I am almost certain they would not honor a warranty through ebay, especially since this was purchased as a bulk OEM. After you look at this listing and warranty aside, would you feel this is an honest, true Seasonic PSU that was indeed bought in bulk as OEM and being resold or do you believe this listing is a counterfeit product? I have bought several PC components from ebay before without a single problem, but want to be sure on the PSU.

Do your research (which it loos like you have, find a pric from a reputable distributor, and buy it. You already said you blew your budget on other compnents, but now you are scrimping and saving, and playing a shell game to power all those expensive components...? That doesn't make much sense. Bite the bullet, and buy the right PSU fro your needs from somewhere that will ensure you are covered with warrenty, and if it's more than your budget now allows, wait a month or two until you scrape up the difference. Don't put yourself in a position of rushing to a decision just for the sake of makin the decision. This ends in tears more often than not...

Good luck and congrats on the new rig.

Do not judge people until you've walked a mile in their shoes. Then at least you are a mile ahead of them when you ###### them off...

You make a fair point. I have already decided I'll spend more than I wanted for a good PSU, the decision is now, if this ebay listing is in fact an OK listing, then I would be able to get a very good Seasonic PSU with a higher watt rating at a cheaper price than anything good on Newegg. I'm just trying to do enough shopping around where I can still get a great PSU at a decent deal instead of jumping on the first price I see. I wanted to jump on this ebay listing but I know that can always bite you in the rear and that's why I came here, for some input. I have been appreciating all of it too so far, thanks guys!

Sorry but I can't advise you to purchase something that could very well be counterfeit and that you would have absolutely no comeback with if it went wrong. I bought a product from a reseller on Ebay with *many* more positive ratings than the one you've linked to that turned out to be counterfeit, they probably didn't know themselves, possibly they got offered a good deal on what looked to be the genuine item and passed them on through Ebay. For this reason and because I know how manufacturers view Ebay with regards to support & warrentys I stay well away and advise others to do the same.

Thank you for the honest opinion. Like you said, the reseller may think it's real and it isn't, I never thought of that. The other one I am looking at is this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182132 I don't have the room for a non modular PSU.

That eBay link says item no longer for sale

Interesting... the original link I posted doesn't work but the line in a quote does. Here is the link that is working for me: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Seasonic-M12-700-M12-SS-700W-ATX-EPS-Modular-80-Certified-Power-Supply-/321077062449

The Rosewill one looks fine, plenty of reviews online they all seem to suggest that it does the job and is worth considering if you're on a budget.

Thanks for all the help everyone! I went with the Rosewill one, a little bit high on the price but like stated earlier, not a good idea to skimp out on the PSU.

Should be a pretty good system!
