No, no FSX textures can be updated and shown with FSX running. You must shut down and re-start FS for the refresh to take place. Same is true in FS9.

Hey Jim, thanks

I thought it was worth the ask, I guessed that it was the only true way to compare different textures seeing as there are soooo many.

Regards

Paul,

Let me add that most settings can be adjusted without a re-start, but textures need that re-start.

I think you need to shut down AS (if it is running), make the texture change, shut it down again and then restart for use. Am I off base in this belief Jim S??

This in addition to shutting down FSX.

AS can submit textures at any time. It is only FSX that needs to be restarted. There are only a few cases of when AS needs to be restarted and those are some settings options. AS is a texture installer and will use the textures located in FSX.

So that is way too much starting and stopping of AS!

Don't believe so. I'm pretty sure it's the RC version and the Sp updates are not included. Current beta SP2 is version 6 and it contains new graphics - I'd dowload that and install the complete version

you want the SP2 Beta combined update.

Vic

Just checking there, I installed te combined, and my build is version 4801, shouldn't it be 4815

03/08/2013 SP2 Release Candidate

Release Candidate (B4815) is now available.  Those who have already updated to B4801 (Combined) only need the latest Software update (B4815).  "

I have a couple of questions though,

How does the layers work?

Is it like stratus is the lower part, ie say 2-3000ft  then cumulus about 2000ft - 10000ft and that's the first 2 layers?

currently I have 6 layers as I have no drop in fps at tis time(even with the md11 but at default airports, i think because I changed from 32 bit to dxt5/1) - I realise 32 bit is better looking and a bigger hit on fps, but can any of the options be on 32 bit?

Sorry - thought I made it clear to d/l the combined first and then the 4815 update.  Just d/l the 19mb update and you are good to go.

AS will populate the layers as needed per the metar so you cant really say that stratus goes here, cumulus goes here, etc except that the diffrent cloud forms occur at different altitudes usually. So you might have stratus, cumulus and then cirrus - all or none or some. You could also have low cumulus, etc. Since I've never really been concerned with I am not sure whether you can assign a specific cloud type to a specific layer.

As far as mixing 32bit and DXT5 - play around until you get a combo you like. That's the flexibility of AS. IMHO, chasing fps can be harmful to your health!  :)  Look for smoothness. I rarely look at the fps counter unless I am testing something. Just get some basic settings that look good and are smooth. Then see if you can improve the looks without changing the smoothness. If you get 19fps silky smooth or 30fps silky smooth - you will not know the difference unless you are looking at the frame counter.

Others have commented on AS Beta's and believe me as a CORE beta tester - it doesn't go out for a PUBLIC beta until we have run it through the paces. Our public betas are more like interim progress reports.

Since I was one who made a small comment earlier re beta testing I'm going to reply here. I did not wish to imply there was anything inherently wrong with D/L'ing and running a public beta. I was only stating that as a general rule I don't do it. While I admit to always loading and enjoying the end result service packs, I simply have decided to wait around for their completion but do admit (again) to always having been pleased with the results.

As a general rule, I totally agree with you Dan - a lot of developers throw out something that should be called an alpha build and let others find the bugs. I was just pointing out that if you find a bug in on of our betas, it is usually something minor.

Again, as a general rule, I let others do the testing - you sort of have to look at the company.

HI Vic,

Sorry I should have made myself clearer, when I said 2-3000ft etc I didn't actually mean them parameters, I just meant is that how it works - ie stratus takes one layer, cumulous takes another( although it may take 4 or more or whatever, or it may take 6 layers out of 10 etc)

If I select cumulus in 32 bit, I get massive stutters and FPS drops, no matter how many layers I have, - after the update (4815) I did get massive "blobks" of white from the air looking down on the ground , I also got this(although it has only happened once.

May or may not be connected, but it has just happened once, out of 30+flights

Thanks

Paul
