overspeed and autothrottle issues

Featured Replies

I feel a little sheepish asking for help in this forum as I have all the other PMDG aircraft and have been simming for 15 years. Just go the MD-11 and can't figure this out. After several attemps "winging it", I finally loaded the EGLL to LSZH tutorial but had the same problem. Everything seems to proceed as planned until I try to descend and on approach to landing. The aircraft quite simply wont't slow down. It blows right through the 10000ft/250kt restriction at something over 350kts. using spoilers, flaps, lowering the gear has no effect. Despite attempting to disconnect the autoflight system, the throttles don't respond to any inputs. They function fine before takeoff prior to engaging autoflight. What am I doing wrong?? My EPR guage indicates that the engines are close to idle during this entire time.

heavy aint it. :) Are you managing spoilers during the complete descent? Most the time the FMC will call for spoilers during descent and I find if I deploy when it tells me to I do alright managing speeds. I usually switch to manual speed a couple thousand feet before 10000 just to make sure im wooed down.

LIke Rendi has stated, when it flags up 'Drag Required', I open the spoliers. I never use manual speed setting as I let it set its own Vref flap speeds. Just one thought though. Are you arming the spoiler at 10k? I have done over 2 score landings with it and each time have managed to auto-land(Dual Land)after capturing the G/S at the Vref speeds no problem.

And to set the manual speed bug, you have to make sure that you are actually pulling the FMS speed setting knob out to the setting you require, i.e.240, etc. I presume that you are doing that?

Good day My Friend

What you read Above is exactly what you need to do,   to slow down  + spoiler , Although it may seem that it is not slowing down or you have had your spoiler's for a Long time but it will slow down

the other thing is some times even if you have selected 220 or 180  speed  manually you only see it is taking 230 speed , once it reaches the comfy ZONE you need to adjust and pull the speed knop again to make it slow down to the desired speed  you want.

It might not make sense as reading it,  but if you practice it you will see what I and the others are talking about , and i also think for any simmer switching Aircraft's is always a little confusing

Hop this helps  happy Landings

Quick update. After going back into the load management program, I realized that I had left the fuel slider at the default value, even though I had set it correctly in the PMDG menu. This resulted in a 60,000 lb weight discrepancy. I also never realized until doing some further research that the autothrottle and autopilot function as one system rather than 2 seperate ones in all the boeing products I've flown. After a successful KLM flight from OIIE to EHAM, I think I've figured this beast out! Thanks for the responses

Well Done and Weclome to long-hauls. Now go out and get the best out of her.

The AT is a little funky at first, but as you've discovered, it does a really nice job as long as you plan your descents carefully.

One trick is to tell it that ANTI-ICE will be used during descent. This causes it to move the ToD out a little further.

If speed is not a factor then you can just go down as you like, but she needs about 18 track miles in level flight to decelerate from high speed to Vref.

Best regards,

Robin.
