March 27, 201313 yr I heard SWA uses a really low cost index, that's probably why their planes under perform. Every airline uses very low ci's right now due to the economy. Southwest also uses the highest rated engines on their aircraft compared to other NG operators (i.e: 24K vs 22K on the 700.) Southwest also does not derate their takeoffs (FLEX temps are used though.) You want some low ci's, check out some of the legacies (A.A has been known to use ci's of 3 for their longer flights.) I can understand the frustration with WN's 800's after dealing with their -700's. They fly their -700's like F-16's. You just can't do that with the -800 (and especially the -900's.) I remember a WN flight from KDAL-KAUS that I was on. Maybe 30 passengers and a nice cool morning. The pilot did a full power takeoff, and we were airborne within 3000 ft. There was so much thrust, you could hear all the bags in the overhead bins slide backwards. The -900 was designed as a direct replacement for the 757-200. It's basically the same size. Now take a 757 and put some cfm-56's on it, and you'll see some lethargic climb rates. Matt L.
