Delicate topic: Planespotter videos to discredit pilot's performance?

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

recently I was heading for Tegucigalpa, Toncontin, MHTG again, expecting the challenging RNAV landing to runway 02.

Curiously I checked YouTube and found the following landing...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJoXMcehrYo

... where the 737 is brought down as it seems (perspective!) not before half of the runway was gone.

The pilots brake as hard as possible -- nevetheless you expect almost that you see the plane vanishing downslope behind the runway.

However, still speady they turn off (I think) via the last taxiway. Everything is fine.

Really?

Given that this very landing might not have been dangerous at all (again: Perspective and hard to judge how fast they had to turn off),

I wonder, if true borderline landings (or take-offs or whatever) lead to any consequences?

Planespotter videos bring extraordinary situations to a broad attention (remember LH044 to EDDH,

).

Also the tower crews could report special occurences...

I do not want to imply that any kind of denunciation is a solution

(who would be right? ...does proof exist? ...video from different angles?

...blackbox data analyses without a bigger incident? ...big brother is watching you?),

but is a kind of reporting process implemented to follow up and improve whatever can be improved?

(I have heard about anonymous reports regarding alcohol in the cockpit, but here I speak of more general flying abilities.)

I would think that the pilots would be called in to the chief pilot's office to explain themselves. They could also face disciplinary actions, demotion, loss of command, suspension, termination (maybe if an incident/accident occurs?).

video from different angles?

I would go by with what the CVR/FDR/QAR says rather than a spotter's video. When it comes to the latter, all there is a perspective view of what's happening. How fast was the aircraft going? How much braking action took place? Technical/mechanical defeciencies? Human error?

I'm sure that the captain/entire flight crew would have to file an incident report when something goes wrong.

Which one? Toncontin, Hamburg? Both?

Have you performed the Toncontin RNAV approach and landing on rwy 02?

Most large airlines now have a Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) program, it uses data recorded during flight (usually by the Quick Access Recorder) to look for potential issues (e.g. hard landings, unstable approaches, long touchdowns). That could be with specific pilots, but also with specific airports. The results of the analysis might lead to changed procedures, or extra training. True disciplinary action would be very rare, especially since it doesn't really help to prevent accidents.
