March 30, 201313 yr Has anyone tried this? https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tabletfmc/id594107421 Does it interface directly with the NGX? Ive tried similar products and to my dissapointment it was difficult to use. In our house we have cabled internet, and an option to have it wireless. Unfortunately my FSX computer is a bit far from the wifi-router, so it was really slow. I pushed a button, and it took a awhile until the reaction came, so make shure you aint to far away from the router and that you have a good and stable connection. Often theese programs require you to fly in windowed mode, which is a very big deal to me, but not to everyone. If you get everything right, I think its a great utility and a great idea. However, id much rather prefer a small touch-screen that could be connected to the computer, and display the FMC without any wireless use. Hope this helps Yngve GiljebrekkeENZV NSB
March 30, 201313 yr Author Yes, its going to be a toss up between this and Virtual CDU -- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.virtualavionics.virtualcdu&hl=en Apparently virtual CDU doesn't require you to have a window mode and it interfaces directly to the NGX/iFly. Not too sure about TabletFMC. I want a CDU as well, but that will have to wait until the other components of my cockpit come first. Soarbywire - Avionics Engineering
March 30, 201313 yr Try Virtual CDU for Android, works great with NGX & iFly 737. There is a free demo to try before you buy. For me it was a no-bainer, totally worth buying a new tablet for. Check out my very basic vid showing Virtual CDU in use
March 30, 201313 yr Try Virtual CDU for Android, works great with NGX & iFly 737. There is a free demo to try before you buy. For me it was a no-bainer, totally worth buying a new tablet for. Check out my very basic vid showing Virtual CDU in use Considering the cost of a true to life CDU for flightsim from any developer, you make an excellent point. Its really cheap to just buy an android tablet than to spend that money on a CDU from say Flyengravity (1288 USD) compared to a Samsung Galaxy S4 (about 650-700 USD, and thats far from the cheapest one). So its all about realism. Do you prefer the looks or the cost of it? Yngve GiljebrekkeENZV NSB
April 2, 201313 yr So its all about realism. Do you prefer the looks or the cost of it? I like it all to be honest. Ok I would like a dedicated CDU and I was saving £500 to buy such a unit ... BUT is that really a good use of funds? especially in theis day and age where everyone is feeling the pinch in this global economy. My thoughts were if I spent £150 on a tablet and the £13 for the app I would be in a win win situation, I get a CDU and I have a tablet for personal use. Ok the Virtual CDU app on a tablet is not like having a real 'look-alike' CDU on my sim but at about 1/4 of the price of a pro built CDU its a bargin! In the past I have used a touch screen to display a CDU, but to do that I have had to run in windowed mode and with the extra window open it does knock down my FPS. With the Vitrual CDU I no longer use the touch screen for the CDU meaning more FPS, the small Virtual CDU Control Manager program does not really affect my system so in realality my system is running faster ... a win - win - win situation. If you have an Android tablet running Adnroid 2.3.3 or higher its a totally no-brainer, if you dont have a tablet and you want a CDU its totally worth getting one just for the CDU alone and I'm sure you can put the new tablet to good use ouside of the sim. I bought a in-car tablet holder via ebay and mounted it underneath my sim desk so I can swing it in to postion when I need to sue/mount the CDU tablet ... cost £9 and works a dream. Anyway ... I'll get off the Virtual CDU soap box now
April 2, 201313 yr tabletFMC does have more supported planes though, maybe a good excuse to buy an iPad! Just read you have to have the FMC undocked :( that always crashes my PC so no use for me. Also an intereting review: I did, however, have a problem with TabletFMC, which was particularly predominant on the PMDG 737, much less so on the CS B757 and it returned on the LDS. Although commands could still be sent to the sim by pressing appropriate buttons on the iPad screen, the display never updated so, although the sim was showing the ROUTE page, or the PERF INIT page, for example, TabletFMC was still showing the POS INIT page. I tried numerous methods of resolving this and the only one which reliably worked was to put the iPad into standby, bring it back to life, then reconnect to the server. This was particularly irritating when it happened, whether it was during the setup for a flight, or in flight when I would look at the iPad, look at the sim and see different waypoints displayed as “next” and different times/fuel quantities on the PROGRESS page. It unfortunately happened fairly regularly and for no apparent reason. The other issue I had, which I’ve already mentioned, is the fact that the undocked FMS/CDU window has to be constantly open. Once up and trying to actually operate this in a “live” environment, I found it even more limiting than I expected. Trying to resize or move the window off the screen caused it to not be visible on the iPad, either, so it sat down there in the bottom right hand corner all flight, blocking visibility of the EFIS screens, meaning I constantly had to ‘look around’ it to see what was happening with the engines, flaps, etc. When I was mousing over other controls to set up the overhead, for example, when something needed doing on the FMS, I just clicked the on-screen window. It was easier than transferring my attention from the sim and mouse to the iPad, then back. http://www.simflight.com/2013/02/17/review-tabletfmc-for-idevices/ So you cant even move the undocked FMC out of the FSX window, thats useless!
February 10, 201412 yr Hey guys can I get some feed back on the tablet size you are using for the virtual CDU? I have it and its great. Im using a 7 inch tablet and its a bit small for my fat fingers so I use a tablet Pen and no probs However Im thing of getting a bigger Tablet and was thinking 10inch. Would this be to big? Its always hard to tell until its in your hand. ZORAN
