REX Essentials Textures & FSX CFG File

Featured Replies

Posted this over on the REX forums, and thought I'd ask for an "outside" opinion up here, too. Very simply - I'm running FSX with 8 Gb of RAM and a EVGA GeForce GTX650/1Gb video card. I had previously been having OOM errors, and decided to set my fsx.cfg file from a TML of 4096 back to 1024 to see what happened. However, my REX settings (and they only offer the adjustment to the cloud settings) were 4096 HD.

REX states in their docs to make sure the TML is set to 4096 to take advantage of their system. So now I am wondering - are all of the REX textures done in 4096 HD rendition? Should I change my REX cloud settings to 1024, and leave my TML setting at 4096? Or should I leave my REX settings at 4096 and set my TML at 1024? The real question is, how is REX doing their textures, and what is the correlation between fsx.cfg and REX?

I just got over tweaking my nVidia Inspector settings and my fsx.cfg file, and now this. Call me confused. HELP!

Got an answer from REX techs:

If you have 4096 textures selected in REX and a TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=2048 in the FSX CFG you will see 2048 mipmaps of the REX textures in game. In other words, TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD is the maximum texture size that will show in FSX, even if you have this set to 4096 and load 2048 REX textures, the end result will be 2048. If you have TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD set to 2048 and load 4096 REX textures the end result will still be 2048.

So I'm leaving my REX set-up at 4096, and will tweak the fsx.cfg TML setting for the best performance.

So, what happens if you have TML set at 4096 and REX configurations set at 4096?  I have AS2012 and I can check what textures I want AS2012 to display.  I selected the sky and clouds only.  If I set them at 4096, FSX will crash or freeze 100% of the time.  My TML setting in FSX is 4096 and I assume that's just for everything except sky and clouds.  If I move the AS2012 setting to 1024 and keep my TML set at 4096, I won't get a crash or freeze during the flight and I will have HD clouds.  But, if I keep the AS2012 textures at 4096, and set TML to the default of 1024, I will get a crash/freeze.  So I find this explanation from REX strange to say the least.  I'm not sure how they came up with that explanation.  I want HD textures other than the sky and GEX is one program that does that very well.  I mainly fly with photoscenery and I need a TML of 4096.  In any case, thanks for getting the info from the REX team.

Best regards,

Jim

FROM REX: If you have 4096 textures selected in REX and a TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=2048 in the FSX CFG you will see 2048 mipmaps of the REX textures in game.

From the first sentence - if REX is set to 4096 and my fsx.cfg TML is set to 2048, all my REX textures will be 2048. IOW, the fsx.cfg file controls the resolution, not REX. And so it goes that if my REX textures (clouds - I see no place to set the other textures as far as resolution) are set to 2048, and my TML is set to 4096, I will only get the 2048 clouds. Ergo, I am setting REX to the default 4096 HD setting, and will fine-tune my sim by altering the TML. If I set my TML to 1024, everything REX will be 1024 (in the sim), if I set it to 2048, everything REX will be 2048.

Now what did I get wrong?

That's right, you can control texture resolution from REX menu and/or FSX.CFG.

 - In REX menu you choose resolution for REX textures, to be used/loaded in fsx.

 - In FSX.CFG, you choose resolution for all textures in fsx. If you limit all FSX textures resolution to 1024, no higher resolution can be displayed in fsx, no matter how much is actually their real resolution.

I use REX for long time, with my 560ti i use 1024 DXT5 optimized clouds(default fsx format for clouds). In fact, i use for all textures resolution of 1024, and DXT optimization where is available(DXT5 optimized clouds and DXT1 wave animation).

I don't use REX textures only for Aircraft lights, becouse this can lead to the problems with some addon aircrafts(missing lights), like PMDG MD11.

I have in FSX.CFG TML set to 2048, for NGX VC cockpit textures to be displayed well.

So, my fsx will show NGX textures in 2048 resolution, and REX textures in 1024.

With higher resolution for REX textures you may get poor performance in bad weather, if you don't have really powerfull graphic card.

Also this may happen - REX HDD textures + Payware aircraft VC cockpit HD textures + Payware Scenery HD textures + mcphat studios HD liveries = more than 4GB virtual memory = OOM errors.

Hoppe that helps
