New computer

Featured Replies

Hey, I'm buying a new computer and I am looking at this:

CPU: i7 3770 / 3.4GHZ

Motherboard: Gigabyte z77-ud3

Graphics card: VGA Nvidia GT650/1Gb

Memory: 16GB / 1333 DDRIII

HDD: 1TB SATAII

power supply: raidmax 700W full

Windows 7/64bit

Will this run PMDG 737Ngx and pay ware scenery at over 20fps?

New to forums so not sure where to post this sorry, any tips are welcome, because I am to the best at computers :P

Thanks

Also what would I need to make it run at at least 20 fps with pmdg737ngx and payware scenery

I would downgrade your cpu to the i5-3570k, so that you can over clock it. With the savings from that, I would get a much better video card. You would want a 660 at least. You also will want to change that psu to a more reliable brand: corsair, pc power and cooling, ocz, sea sonic. Expect to pay around 80 dollars for a good 600w psu.

I have a similar set up but the i5-3570k at 4.3 ghz. I can get 15-20 fps in the ngx on the ground at fsdt and flytampa airports. In the air locked at 30 no problem. There's always a compromise. I have a small amount of ai traffic (30% ut2) low road traffic, lowish autogen, minimum cloud coverage with opus, 2048 textures. If I land at an airport and the weather is bad and traffic is heavy, frames are low. I'll usually turn off ai to help the fps while landing and taxiing.

Thanks for your help :)

In addition to snowingairlines suggestion, I'd recommend two hard drives, or if you can swing it, two SSD drives.  Put Windows on one of the drives and FSX on the other drive.  And whether you go with the i5-3570K or one of the i7's, just make sure it has the "K" on the end which means you can overclock it.  To get the performance you desire you're going to need to be running all the cores at 4.4Ghz or faster.  Which also means you're going to need to upgrade the CPU cooler to something beefier. If your case has good airflow, generally one of the massive coolers from the likes of Zalman or Coolermaster.  If your case may not have the best airflow you may need to look into liquid cooling.

Go for K series CPU, for overclocking. Minimum 2500k. This is really required for smooth fsx and high quality jets addons.

If you are going to use PC only for fsx, you don't need 16GB RAM. 8GB dual(two sticks)are recommended, with good timings.

I can run NGX at 30fps most of time, with tons of addons sceneries, REX, AS2012 etc

I'll echo the above sentiments. Fsx is all about CPU clock speed so overclocking is almost a necessity. Stay away from a "big box store" PC. Go to a custom builder like cyberpower where you can choose all the components yourself.

CPU - A K version processor like an I5 3570K or an I7  3770k. The Sandy bridge CPU's OC better but may not be available anymore except through an online hardware store like Newegg.

CPU cooling- Anything but stock. A good air cooler like the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO is fine for a moderate overclock.

Memory- Anything over 1600 Mhz with tight timings like the Corsair Vengeance series ( important for overclocking). 8gb is plenty for Fsx

GPU- NVIDIA is generally accepted to be superior when it comes to FSX. The 660TI is a good compromise between performance and price

PSU- 750 watts is plenty for a single GPU setup. Make sure its 80+ Gold certified.

Storage- SSD's are quickly becoming a mass product so IMO its the only way to go. The best option is to have 1 SSD for your OS and other apps and 1 dedicated to Fsx (2 SSD's). The Samsung 840 series is a good choice

Motherboard- Depends on CPU choice but a Z77 LGA 1155 board for the 4 core Intels I listed earlier. I prefer ASUS but that's a matter of personal preference. Just keep in mind that the cheapest boards won't have certain overclocking features, extra USB ports, Wi Fi capability, etc.
