My new favorite aircraft to "Hand Fly".....The Ol' Blackbird

Featured Replies

Hi Folks - the Ol' Blackbird is here just for a sec - to say "thanks" to Majestic Software, for producing what is undoubtedly one of the finest flying simulated aircraft ever to grace FSX.  Wow!  Smooooooth, and "buoyant" are words that best describe my flight experiences with this aircraft so far.  Landing this aircraft by hand is nothing short of phenomenal.  Again - the buoyancy that you guys (and gals?) have put into this plane's flight model are wonderful.  It just feels right - like you have "air" under the wings.  Not static at all....very nice.

I must admit - when I saw that some folks were having initial purchase/activation issues - I almost did not buy this aircraft.  Boy, am I glad I decided to "go for it".  Everything in my purchase was perfect - no problems at all.    Thanks, Just Flight!!

After making a few short flights, I decided to edit the sounds a bit - a personal thing, to be sure.  I do this with almost every plane I buy.  Some sounds were a bit too loud for my taste - others a bit too soft - so I "tweaked 'em".

The Q400's Control panel made yoke and throttle setup / adjustment a breeze - well done.  A couple of other "tweaks" (to the ini file), and I was a happy camper.  Sorry - had to get rid of the propwash yaw - it was driving me nuts!  I know - it's supposed to yaw left - but.......

Anyway, I wish you folks at Majestic all the best - I hope this aircraft sells like wildfire for you.  Well worth the price of admission, IMHO!!

All best,

Ray L (Blackbird)

P.S. - thanks to Tom Allensworth for allowing/setting up? this Forum - it is greatly appreciated!

Good post Ray. I agree 100%.

What ini settings did you change ? Just curious. Especially the prop wash.

Hi, Julian.......First - make sure you have a solid backup before you tweak anything in FSX.  You've been warned!

Go into the Q400's directory (the name is mjc8q400 for me).

Next, go into the ini directory.

Open the mjc84.ini file.

Look for - YAW_DUE_TO_PROPWASH = 1.  Change the 1 to a Zero;  save the file.  Done.

I also adjust (lower) the Aileron Effectiveness number (so I can make the Roll less sensitive) - makes the plane feel "heavier" - less like a fighter jet - for me this one edit makes the plane much more "real" - read....HEAVY.  I also edit the Rudder Effectiveness (a little), and finally the Elevator Trim Effectiveness (so I can more easily trim her out to my liking - I like to NOT use the AutoPilot anymore than I have to - I prefer to "fly" this plane.)

Good luck - remember - backup first!  B)

All best,

Ray L (Blackbird)

Many thanks Ray, I will remember you at xmas

Hi, Simeon and Rich - thanks...... yeah, what an outstanding aircraft!!!  The flight model reminds me of some of the great flight work of Alex Metzger or Rob Young.  Two great programmers who understood what a simulation should "FEEL" like  - very hard to do, when you're sitting at a non "floating" computer workstation!  This aircraft just "floats" thru the air......no Autopilot for me on this one!!

Thanks again!

Best,

Ray L. (Blackbird)

You're welcome, Julian.....

Best,

Ray L.

Interesting .ini edits, Ray, and thanks for sharing them...I'll give them a try.

Although I have to say, I'm enjoying having to pay attention to rudder trim (due to propwash). I have rudder trim assigned (via FSUIPC) to one of the hat switches on my CH Eclipse Yoke, and it's becoming second nature trimming her level with that while using the slip indicator on the PFD....very cool.

Hi, Wayne.....an interesting idea with your yoke.  I use the Eclipse as well.

I guess I just have enough trouble crabbing in a 20 knot crosswind, without fighting a persistent yaw.....but it is prob a good skill to master.  You've now got me thinking....  That's what I love about this hobby.  Other folks share their ideas, experiences, etc.. in the Forum.

I'm curious... your signature.....JG1.  Junior Grade 1?  You Navy?

Best,  Ray L

I certainly agree about the value of these forums being the sharing of experiences and ideas. I've learned a ton from folks posting here.

As to my username, no, Ray, it has nothing to do with the Navy. Over a decade ago, my introduction to flightsimming was via a WW2 combat sim, IL-2 Sturmovik. I became so enamored of it that I joined a virtual squadron, JG1, a German squadron that fought online. RudiJG1 was my moniker then.

I've barely matured since then...but am still having fun!

Wow!  I remember messing with IL-2!  It was addicting like Falcon 4...

Great stuff!   Sorry for getting off-topic.....

Have a good evening.....
