June 2, 201313 yr What's the argument for 3970X over 3930K? Such a huge price difference, and the extra cache can't matter much if any. How does the X vary from the K processors, since both are unlocked, yes or no? I'm going to go ahead w/ an SB-E processor, GTX Titan, and some 2400mHz ram and an X79 mainboard. Later model CPUs don't appear to offer much more and I do want 6 cores. Good cooler for the 3930K? H100? June 2, 201313 yr The extreme line (X) CPU:s can make high clocking easier but they come with a very high price tag for those benefits. Concidering you are going for a 2400MHz memory kit the 3970X should help to get a stable CPU clock AND memory clock. Not saying a 3930K won't do it but chances are greater with a 3970X. It is however a lot of money to spend to 'test and see'. Good water cooling for the CPU will make CPU clocking easier but you need very good case ventilation as well as the VRM on the X79 will get extremely hot at high CPU clocks. Motherboards with actice VRM cooling fans, like the Asus Sabertooth X79 and Rampage IV Extreme would be my choice. Hans Hjorth

My understanding is that the K CPUs have an unlocked multiplier so that one can have the same degree of control. I can see there being something material if the Xs and Ks and sorted according to their degree of overclockability, but is that the mechanism for making 'high clocking easier'? June 3, 201313 yr The 3930K and the 3970X are both unlocked but their capabilities and quality at high clocks may vary. CPU:s go through a ‘binning’ process whereby their thermal and frequency characteristics are analysed. Due to variances in the production process some chips may not run as well and will get binned as lower range chips while others which performs well may end up as higher end chips, unless market demand for a lower range chip is calling.
