October 5, 200421 yr Hi,I have been using FSNAV for a long time, and from what I read its not going to be supported anymore, or have any SID/STAR updates. So, my question is what would be a worthy successor to FSNAV?.At the moment I use FSNAV instead of the flight planner in FS, to plan all my flights.Any suggestions?Dan.
October 5, 200421 yr I have Super Flight Planner and might be worth a look for free but I don't think it has the moving map and I'm not sure right now about updating SIDS/STARS etc. though I could be wrong. FSBuild free version is worth a look for something rather different and the pay version is said to be a lot better plus there should be good support for it.
October 5, 200421 yr Don't mind paying for it if it does all the things I want.It would be nice to have the "map" available in FS, I sometimes use the map in FSNAV to check radials etc whilst flying. So what I really want is FSNAV but with new SID/STAR supportDan.
October 5, 200421 yr Dan,the massage, that FSNav will be ceased was most likely a fake. Check out this thread on the same issue.http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...12958&mode=fullWolfgang
October 5, 200421 yr Yeah, but just to be on the safe side, wanted to know what alternatives were available ;)Dan.
October 5, 200421 yr I would check out CoursePlanner. I never used FSNavigator but I believe they are very simular in functions plus it has a moving map, can be used on a 2nd PC, and it's a freebie!
October 5, 200421 yr >I have Super Flight Planner and might be worth a look for>free but I don't think it has the moving map and I'm not sure>right now about updating SIDS/STARS etc. though I could be>wrong. From http://www.cpinf.net/web/products.php "The moving map is the core of Super Flight Planner" and "SFP comes with a database of more than 20000 DP-STAR".I haven't used SFP since FS98 or thereabouts, so I don't know about putting in updates to the database, but it is surely worth a try.--Bryn
October 5, 200421 yr I gave CoursePlanner a try a while back but soon gave up when I realised it was necessary to pay. I don't remember whether it works for a limited time before you have to register or what, but I tried Super Flight Planner and it does OK for me. Another thing that is useful is here http://rfinder.asalink.net/free/and it's free, also it's continually based on updated information. Copying the result into FSBuild means it can then be exported to FS9 and then imported from there to SFP (I don't think it's possible to transfer directly from FSBuild to SFP). When there you can make further changes if you want and then export back to FS9. A bit cumbersome, but it does give the opportunity to base your flights on real world flight plans.
October 6, 200421 yr Cheers guys, I will see what the outcome of the FSNAV debacle is and also look at the alternatives listed here.CheersDan.
October 6, 200421 yr What I can't stand with FSNAV, is when you load it in FS, the time it takes to draw all the RED DOTS all over the worldTakes forever
October 6, 200421 yr Author BoDEAN,FSNav should only take forever to draw if you have AA enabled, and then only certain AA values.I have found that with no AA or 4xAA FSNav draws quickly, with 2xAA or 2xQ the redraw is slow and often corrupted.
October 6, 200421 yr Author Dan,I have used FSNav since I started simming back in 1998 and I don't think I have used its SID/STAR DB for the last 5.5 years :-)The places I fly to/from I normally get the charts and then check the existing FSNav SID/STARs and correct them if they are incorrect - no big deal.I did consider FSCommander as a worthy replacement but it only uses the US military database for updates which is not adequate for European flights. If FSCommander got its updates from Richard Steffan's site then I would take a serious look at it, especially as you can run it on a second PC.Rgds
