May 12, 201313 yr Well, the C172 in 10.21 can be anything (*) but twitchy is certainly not what it is!!!... It is now pretty much "on-rails", with trims at set&forget, and even with the art-stab sliders all the way left. Although not the same model in FSX / P3D, I actually find theose more twitchy now! But, even "better"... Pick the default C172 up to, say, 15000', initiate a 90º dive until your ASI has the needle at the max limit, way past redline, and... pull hard on your stick! See what happens :-) And I allways use 4 flight models per frame... This, Larry, is the most on-rails you can think of... Poor old crap MSFS doesn't allow for it because it's lausy flight dynamics model is actually not capable of forgetting about many things such as basic accelerated stalls... :-) And... from a glider pilot perspective, pick the default K21 and see how on-rails it feels... One of the major flaws is the total lacks of "over-banking" no matter how tight you fly your coordinated turns! Enable your flight model graphical display (CTRL-M, I believe) and see why / what is wrong... BTW: X-Plane's turn & slip instruments are not very effective. MSFS has the very same problem, MS FLIGHT corrected it... The yaw string is even worse in X-Plane10, so, when flying gliders in this sim I always revert to HUD mode. The turn coordination cue in the HUD is a lot more effective and reliable to help you properly coordinate turns on any aircraft type in X-Plane! X-Plane is certainly one of the best hopes for the future, but guys, there is A LOT of work to be done, and please don't make comparisons... It's so easy to find flaws in it's "ultra-realistic" flight dynamics model.... :-/ (*) and I think it does feel better than the default that initially shipped with X-Plane10 thanks to the editing they did to the trim tabs section and Control Phase-Out (see bellow)... xp10.21-c172phase-out.jpg xp10.21-c172trim-tabs.jpg What I find interesting is that something has dramatically changed in the fm's since 10.2 yet other than you and me it seems no one has made much of a comment. Most of the critics of fm's which we mentioned before 10.2 and thus made us "fsx'ers" seem to have vanished. Yes, now xplane flies more like it is on "rails" in the proper way it should. I guess admitting something has changed would be admitting something was wrong? Much easier to diffuse this by blaming Larry as the fsx'er mantra doesn't seem to work anymore. Very strange place-this xplane world. At least I can use the sim now without encouraging bad rw habits which is a good thing. I am so glad progress was made in this area and have to think the dialog from Larry and others was somehow helpful in bringing about this positive change to this sim. Although there are still areas to be improved I now prefer this fm to FSX. Yes-let's get the slip thingy fixed next! Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
May 12, 201313 yr MSFS used yet another type of MoI, not used as far as I can tell in X-Plane10 (but I am not sure about it). It was a cross-moment Ixy. Yet, other cross-moments of inertia exist and are fundamental in understanding some "strange" effects on aircraft and even to understand why some designs prersent real aerodynamical stability issues. You can find many references on Internet but for instance this text is very informative. When I got really enthusiastic about MS FLIGHT, as much as I got with X-.Plane10 :-), I started digging into it's more or less hidden "airfile", and was able to find a very curious thing - MS FLIGHT includes additional cross-inertia moments no only Ixy! Could this account for the particularly remarkable bahaviour of it's more detailled models, such as the Stearman, the Maule and probably also the Carbon Cub? There is IMHO lack of this effects in X-Plane, since I use this sim... but, again, I really don't know how internally the Radii of Gyration, which translate to Ix, Iy and Iz of other approaches are used in the core... There is certainly room for improvement, but things are changing, internal development is taking place, as opposed to anything from ESP.... Let's really hope for an even brighter future :-)!!! May 13, 201313 yr Looks like I have something to look forward to, whenI get my cpu upgrade. Just read an "impression" review of the Carenado Piper Archer at the org. I finished my PPl in one of those, and my wife and I spent some good cross country adventure time in the Archer. Will have to get one of those too.
May 13, 201313 yr Thx Larry! Looking great that Archer :-) I am eagerly waiting for Carenado's email with the link for the updates of my Baron 58 and Seneca ! I have only X-Plane10 demo, since I have invested a lot in DCS World and also in Prepar3d :-/ I might buy X-Plane10 again but, when I bought v8, it was about 1 month before Austin announced v9... Don't want to fall into that one again :-/ 10.30 will soon follow, and we know it usually ends arrounf .70, so.... Went looking for the review and found the one by Angelique. I might just pick this one up, looks like a fun aircraft to fly and do circuits in. Thanks for the heads up Larry.
