June 18, 201312 yr The detail1.bmp will cover all landclass textures as far as I know. Just had a look at an ice covered mountain in Norway and it was there on the ice as well. Hardly noticable though if you're not up right close to it. The texture I use is the one included in the hdev2.zip package, available here in the file library. It comes in a 16-bit(565) format and has no alpha, so I converted it to dxt1 right away and it works fine. You can turn off the detail texture inside FS9 by setting the "Terrain Detail" slider to "none" to see if you might like it better without it altogether.
June 19, 201312 yr Author Thanks everyone. You guys are right. FS9 can't do over 1024. I received a reply from Prealsoft and they agreed (after testing) that the higher res don't work. They had assumed that it would work I guess and they did say I was the first person to mention this to them. So they've kindly offered to let me exchange it for another Prealsoft add on or a refund through simmarket. I'm gong to get a refund. I have re-installed my ARS grass texture which is the same res as default with a better shade of green because I found something I really don't like about the 1024 grass from PS. Shortly after passing 1000ft, there is a very noticeable border between fully loaded textures and the lower res textures farther off in the distance. I can see each individual tile as they load to full res when I approach them. And as I move away, I can see them going into low res. So brighter colors on fully loaded textures and darker ones on the low res textures in the distance. I don't get this with default or ARS grass. It's a smooth transition with them and not noticeable. June 20, 201312 yr Author I'm looking for a grass texture that does not only look good from the ground or at low altitudes, but doesn't cause a strange look to all kind of textures from high altitudes. Hey Harold, I just inserted an amazing detail1 grass texture. I dug up the freeware "HDE V2" by Pablo Diaz that I had forgotten about. There is a 1024 detail1 there that looks really nice. I tested it from the ground all the way to 10 000ft using the Cessna and everything looks great and intact. You may want to give this one a shot. Also, with this one, I don't get any of the issues I had on my previous post above. Nature Boy
June 20, 201312 yr Hi Maurice, I use HDEv2 clouds for years but only Neumanix' post (thanks!) made me aware of the included detail1.bmp. With this version, the appearance of landclass textures is better than with photograss.zip, but near mountains or glaciers the structuring effect is still too strong for my taste. For my purposes and habits (I'm doing heli flights in the mountains quite often), this problem overweighs the look of grass at airports, especially since many add-on airports bring their own grass - even volumetric - nowadays. Therefore I have gone back to stock detail1.bmp. However, it's fine that you found a good grass for yourself! Regards, Harald Harald Geyer Gründer der Messerschmitt Freunde Dresden v. V.
June 21, 201312 yr Author Cool. Sorry to hear it didn't work out for you. I can see that your flying habits can make you a little more picky. I fly airliners 99% of the time. The default detail1.bmp is not bad and does blend in quite nicely with everything. Did you try both the 512 and 1024 detail1 from HDE? Nature Boy
June 21, 201312 yr Maurice, I tried the 1024 detail1 first and then converted it to a DXT1 file, as Neumanix recommended. I saw no big difference. But no problem; as you wrote, the default detail1.bmp is one part of FS2004 that doesn't need to be modified - unlike others...
