June 29, 201312 yr Hi all, I wasn't able to get the software guide to show up on my screen and I am not sure the best place to post this but here goes. I just purchased FSX and I am looking for advice on what addons I should get. Payware or freeware. I will probably spend most my time flying larger passenger jets across the US and to Europe etc and would likely use NYC as a starting base for most flights, so would be interested in a great JFK airport and maybe a nice Heathrow, LAX. So far I am considering GEx, UTX, Traffic 2013, GSX and Opus. For planes I have been looking at captain sim 777, although my understanding is pmdg is about to release their version of a 777. Could anyone recommend an exceptional passenger jet add on? ZMy goal is good graphics, ambiance and atttention to detail. Thanks!
June 29, 201312 yr With all those 'heavy' addons you'll need: - HIGHMEMFIX=1 (in your fsx.cfg) - UIAutomationcore.dll (in your FSX root folder) - FSUIPC (not sure whether it has to be the registered version for some of your addons) The CS777 is neither complete nor bug-free system-wise. Their version 1.2, announced for last month (May), hasn't been released yet. Progress from v0.8 to current v1.1 was slow ... and didn't impress me at all. What happened to AVSIM

The first two items in the list are those files or just changes I need to make in those particular folders. I lookedup FSUIPC and some people said simconnect took its place. I would need to use it to make the addons work? I'm not very tech savvy so these are very basic questions.
June 30, 201312 yr First thing you need to do is play with the default and see how your performance is and what kind of overhead you have for addons as most of what you mention will deeply affect your performance and FSX doesn't have a lot extra depending on system specs. NYC is one of the hardest hitting areas for performance in the sim. road traffic and AI are a big hit, as well as weather.. i have seen to many new users that just started installing things and couldn't understand why they were only getting 10 FPS. June 30, 201312 yr Do some reading up on weather engines. There is debate about which is better for liners - AS2012 or Opus. I use the former for the flight levels and the latter when cumulogranite is closer. You might want to check out FTX Global in lieu of GEX. It's not out yet, although should be within a month. HIGHMEMFIX=1 is a manually added line (entry) to your fsx.cfg to make upper memory space (beyond 2GB) available for certain processes. (In the end it helps to prevent OOMs.) The UIAuto... has to be the Vista 32bit version to be placed in your FSX root folder. (That's a compatibility thing between FSX and OS's after Vista - W7/W8.) Simconnect is built into FSX to interface with addons but FSUIPC is needed with other addons - it also fixes some bugs in FSX which make FSX crash otherwise. Download the unregistered version first (from schiratti.com) and don't pay for the licence key unless you're absolutely sure one of your addons requires the registered version. I'd suggest to go for the AVSIM hardware and software guide again or do some searching for these items on the world wide web. And if you want to do me a personal favour ( ): Forget about the Captain Sim 777. Even people who like CS products say it's (even) below CS average. What happened to AVSIM

Mike It seems a lot of people who use Opus run it with Rex textures. Is there a way to get Rex textures for free or are those people buying both the rex and Opus products?
July 1, 201312 yr For planes, I would look at the majestic dash 8, the PMDG 737, md-11, and the upcoming 777. I would also take a look at the airbus x extended as well. If you look around on the forum, you will see that the captain sim 777 is not well received, and learning the PMDG 737 NGX will take you up until the PMDG 777 release. Ryan L.

No, there is no (legal) way to get them for free. However, there are some (obviously limited) alternatives to get at least better looking skies. You could give HDE v2 a try: http://simviation.com/1/search?submit=1&keywords=hde+ Download both 'HDE v2 PhotoRealistic Texture Pack' and 'HDEv2 Sky Colors Converted for FSX': do NOT use the sky textures from the first but only those from the latter! You could also only use the cloud textures from the first and forget about the rest. Another option (which I didn't try myself) offers this site: https://sites.google.com/site/aimecreations/freeware-fsx Apart from clouds it also offers other kinds of new textures.
