Addon Install Order

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Looking at a fresh re-install of FSX fairly soon from a clean format.

When considering terrain/scenery-based addons, what order should I prefer to follow?

I want this to be a broad-based question considering all the types out there, but I'm thinking about things like REX, GEX, FS Genesis Mesh, ORBX, various companies' individual airports, etc. etc.

Is there any preference for how addons like these are put in to service?  Thanks!

In general I would start with big addons and end with smaller ones. So first install worldwide texture replacements like GEX, REX, then meshes like FSGenesis, then ORBX regions if you own them and after that individual airports.

This way at least scenery library entries should be in right order as usually airport addons and such are the top ones and then photosceneries, ORBX, meshes (if they make entries) etc lower as far as I know.

The order in which you install things doesn't really matter because people don't always buy things in the same order too. Everyone buys all kinds of add ons in random order and usually install them in the same random order so when you reinstalll FSX you can also install everything in random order. ;)

I do know though that when you have both GEX and UTX it's more convenient to install UTX first and then GEX because the GEX installer will change certain things so they will work together as they should but still this isn't mandatory because also these addons aren't always bought and installed in the same order and you can take care of things afterwards anyway. It's simply more convenient.

Exceptions obviously are addons to other addons, like FS2Crew for the 737NGX or the 600/700 add-on for the 737NGX 800/900. I would always install the 737NGX first in both cases. But these are rather obvious and logical, I think. All other addons that simply stand alone can be installed in any order you want.

Then again it obviously won't hurt to install EVERYTHING in a logical order as FScamp posted! I would do so too almost automatically, but... it is not mandatory!

P.S. Tip: instead of installing GEX into your fresh FSX install, you might consider skipping it and get FTX Global. ;)

So textures come before mesh?  I kind of figured mesh was always #1 to install since it was like re-creating the earth, then you put the pretty textures on top of that.

UTX before GEX, can do.

Airplane add-ons I have no problem with... just a question of priority for the scenery stuff really. Bad title work on my part.

When is FTX Global coming out?

Do the various weather suites factor in to this at all?

FTX Global release this Saturday. Can't wait to get it!

You mentioned earlier about FSGenesis mesh. Unless you take precautions, this mesh will install without even showing in your Scenery Library, consequently when you install it is irrelevant.

No. As said it doesn't matter at all in which order you install things and this certainly goes for weather addons too.
