X-Plane 10 performance issues...

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I recently started a topic saying I would switch to XPX. I received everything yesterday (GTX 680 ; X-Plane 10) and I installed everything no problem. I loaded up LAX (default) and the 747 (default) and set my joystick and rendering settings. Im getting some pretty bad frames (didnt record FPS the first time) so I ended X Plane and installed the JRollen CRJ (To see if I would have FPS problems) and I am. I then loaded up LAX with the CRJ and was getting 18-24FPS with those settings, now I know the CRJ has an FPS impact but I was thinking i would be able to run that airplane in the default scenery no problem with a little HDR. But I don't know, tell me what you guys think.

P.S.  My GPU has 2GB Vram which is pretty good, my old one had 1GB and in the Seattle semo area I would get 25FPS+

Turn off HDR.  You won't notice much difference (except maybe at night).  If this doesn't help as much as you want, there is a button in the rendering window which allows you to set everything to minimum.  After doing  that, bring up settings a little at a time until you discover what your FR hit is coming from.  It won't take long and you will be flying in the 30s or better soon.

Something seems a bit strange, yes. A lot of your settings are quite low, and the texture size load noted at the bottom is only 200MB, so shouldn't even make a dent in your 2GB card.

I have the same CPU as you with a similar overclock. Previously I had 8GB Ram and found 2xFSAA to be a real drain. Try lowering it to FXAA and see if that gives you a noticeable boost. It'll make the autogen shimmer horribly but at least you'll be able to see if that's the issue.

BTW you should really turn on water reflections to complete. Doesn't make a difference to frames and gives a fantastic effect in return:)

I believe, after further review, that you might turn off everything in the left side of "Stuff to Draw" and everything except "Draw Per Pixel Lighting" in "Special Effects".  That, and lowering cloud detail will get things going and not cut down on your enjoyment much.  I know this sounds like a lot, but try it - I think you will be ok with it.

Ok so after some testing here is what I came up with: Scenery was default LAX using clear weather during the day and the rollen CRJ. For the most part the FPS i was getting was from sitting on the runway with the engines running. Using Dxtory to see FPS.For the most time the camera was in the 3D cockpit with half the screen scenery and other half was instruments if you know what I mean.

-The fist test has no picture because it was not necessary. I did what John said and set everything to minimal settings. I was getting 70-118FPS.

-    Second test: 34 FPS

-    Third test: 31-32 FPS

-     Fourth test: 32 FPS

-     Fifth test: 31 FPS on runway ; 28 FPS on TO ; 21 FPS over scenery

The fifth test (setting almost everything max) I got 16 minimum on TO and 20-26 FPS landing

     Last test: Very nice looking scenery but getting around 19-20 FPS while flying low over the scenery and 16-20 during the night.

I'm getting lower FPS while zooming into the scenery so I think this is a GPU related issue because if i look only at instruments in the cockpit i get 45+ FPS and around 50-60% CPU usage. Ram is about 40-50% also.

Can this issue have anything to do with the latest Nvidia drivers? I heard that many people have trouble with games such as Battlefield 3 when it came out.

Thanks!

Try turning your world detail down to medium. That'll help with fps a fair bit.

Thanks i'll try that next

Will also do that ;)

So I tried setting world detail to medium but that didnt make a difference and turning off all the effects and such only gave me +1 FPS. When I started X-Plane I was between 18-21 FPS on TO using rendering options from the last test.

Hi Artie,

first of all, looking at your tests, I think in your case the FPS is limited by CPU, not GPU.

Try the following:

.) Increase global texture resolutions from "high" to "very high". Your texture resolution is too low! With 2GB on your GPU, you should be able to safely use "very high" without any impact on FPS;

.) You can probably turn on all the "special effects", including HDR and atmospheric scattering;

.) For "HDR anti-aliasing", use "2x SSAA+FXAA" or "4x SSAA". You should be able to use 8x or 16x "anisotropic-filter level" without impact on FPS;

.) Keep your shadow detail to "overlay";

Now the tuning:

1) Turn to minimum the following: "number of trees", "number of objects", "number of roads", "Number of cars", "world detail distance", "airport detail", "water reflection detail";

5) Increase them one to one, looking at their effect on FPS, IN THIS ORDER! :

.number of trees

.number of objects

.airport detail

.number of roads

.number of cars

.world detail distance

.water reflection detail

Ideally, you should arrive at the last step of your tuning with "world detail distance" and "water reflection detail" to minimum and a good FPS "reserve".

So you do the final tuning increasing step by step "world detail distance" and "water reflection detail". These can have a big impact on performance, so you should probably settle for low settings for these two, e.g. "low".

Let us know your results!

Marco, all of your steps helped tremendously! I'm now getting amazing scenery, night lighting, great aircraft all with 35+ FPS at night and during the day. Only a couple things:

1: Cars are a HUGE fps killer. What matters is if you turn it on or not because there is no difference whether you have it on Siberian winter or Downtown LA, the FPS will be the same, it's whether you turn it ON or OFF. Turning it off for me gave me a 10 FPS increase. Coming from FSX i'm used to not using cars so that wont be too bad. Its just nice during the night.

2: I didn't notice a difference in FPS between med and high in the world detail distance but a huge one between low and med (10FPS)

3: Cloud detail is also an FPS killer. I don't notice a bug difference in detail between the different levels but if i put it at 30% it will cut back my FPS to 20. Are there any cloud mods that are good and offer good FPS?

4: And lastly, I noticed on landing (during the night) that there are an enormous amount of gas station autogen near the airport, I counted nearly 20! Why are there so many gas stations? (or petrol stations if you prefer :P ).

That's all! Thanks everybody for your help! X-Plane 10 is looking like the smoothest and nicest simulator I have ever seen!

2. If you don't see much difference in scenery between "low" and "high" world distance, set it to "low" so you can get a nice FPS boost.

3. Yeah, clouds are a big FPS killer. Try setting anti-aliasing to "FXAA" only, and see if your FPS (with clouds visible) increase. Also, see if deactivating HDR has effect on FPS when there are a lot of clouds.

There are several replacement textures for clouds, though I don't think they improve performance:

If you turn HDR off, set FSAA via Nvidia Inspector. Less of a performance hit.

Ok so I tried setting FXAA only but that didnt help, and for world distance i really prefer med or high. If i turn of HDR, and set it in the Nvidia Control, how much FPS will I gain? Also, is it the same effect as in game?

I haven't gotten much improvement from nVidia inspector, but get lots of improvement from turning off HDR - without much (if any) degradation.

Try it without anti-aliasing and then bump it up until you are happy.  You will be!
