High level clouds cut off. Why?

Featured Replies

Does anyone know the reason (and fix) for the high level clouds to be cut off like in this view?  Is it within the program?  Or is it more like a DXT1 vs DXT3 file issue?

I pretty much ignore it; but if it's fixable, I'd like to do it.

Weird.  At first I thought your cloud draw setting was low but it looks like the cumulus clouds are drawn farther out.

I don't think it's a DXT issue.  I've tried DXT clouds and didn't get the cut off.

Are you using REX clouds?  Have you tried installing a fresh set?  Probably better to install a whole new theme and see what happens.

Not REX, these are Pablo's HDE v2 clouds.  I also don't use any real weather software; just a custom "fair weather" setup.

Hi,

clouds get cut off like this when visibility is lower than cloud draw distance. Try increasing visibility in your fair weather theme and cirrus clouds won't be cut off anymore.

I've seen this on numerous occasions, when, for example, I was descending from my cruise FL towards an airport with low visibility. The effect was as if someone was erasing cirrus clouds from the sky. Hardly realistic, but amusing in a way. :)

Jure

Indeed this is the visibility range (not cloud draw range but just plane visibility) which causes this. Set visibility to unlimmited and you'll notice the effect on it.

Thanks, all.  I'll try that.  Then I'll have to decide which is more important - the clouds or having the horizon fade away.  I kind of like the hazy horizon.

I have new clue / observation if anyone wants to take a stab at it...

It appears that the "cutoff" effect (shown in the previous post) only happens when I customize the weather.  If I pick the program's "Fair Weather" theme, for example, I get a similar look but all the high level clouds are intact across the sky.  If I go into Custom / Advanced, and set up my own layers and density - it's back to the cutoff effect again.

Beats me...
