August 7, 201312 yr Commercial Member That's amazing! I can just imagine some other pilot taking off on that runway later and seeing the rubber marks from twelve 52 inch tires going sideways. What the HELL happened here?! They were doing a test that required them to see what would happen to the aircraft if the right engine quit during the takeoff roll. You can see the right engine being throttled back to idle while the left engine is at full takeoff thrust. The resulting yaw caused the pilots to over compensate for the adverse yaw by applying a lot of rudder input which is what you saw there the large rudder input right before the plane skidded sideways. So while skidding sideways the pilots brought the left engine back to idle, brought the aircraft under control then applied reverse thrust and a test objective is completed. The second test (second half of the video) had them doing an RTO using maximum brakes at MtOW. The brakes were actually already worn down that they need to be replaced soon and thus your seeing the brakes glowing red hot which eventually melts the plugs on the tires. The puff of black smoke your seeing is the air being released from the tires. The plugs are designed to melt at a certain temperature point in which air is allowed to escape thus preventing the tires from exploding and causing damage. Those tests are all done at Edwards AFB since the runway is over 14,000 feet long. Plenty of room to fail something and still bring the aircraft under control. Thanks for all the technical info Jason, I appreciate the time you put into the post. I don't expect you (or anyone!) to take the time to read the fine print of my signature of course, but you could see there that I'm a commercially rated multi-engine pilot, so I am indeed familiar with engine failures on takeoff and RTOs!
