August 14, 201312 yr In any post, the letters FSX will be automatically hyperlinked to a promotion of that sim. Why is this not the case for FS9? There are quite a lot of addons available for both FS9/FSX. <--- See what I mean? I don't think it always was like this, it feels fairly recent. In the interest of balance. I believe FS9/FS2004 - even if it is venerable - still deserves this kind of attention. Now this is not meant as the start of a thread discussing the relative merits of one or the other sim. People might feel that this is a trivial concern, but even little things like this may contribute to the demise of a sim which some of us including myself love dearly and would like to see getting a fair representation! August 14, 201312 yr FSX is still being sold, FS9 is not. That is the only reason I could come up with.
August 14, 201312 yr I would have thought the main reason is because, making the Links to Wikipedia takes time, and a decision as to what should be linked, and what should not, FSX is Linked 777 is linked 737 is NOT linked 747 is NOT linked Also, someone has to decide what should be linked, and what should not, and then do it, and then face the complaints because other think they should have Linked this, and not that !! (ie this Topic ) IMHO Less is better .. you can always cut-paste "anything" you want into Wikipedia. - so there is little need so that many items to be links within Avsim. A lot to be said for the "KISS" principle and "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"
August 14, 201312 yr Author FSX is still being sold, FS9 is not. That is the only reason I could come up with. I can still buy FS2004 in stores here in Germany at least, saw a copy only two weeks ago, so that seems o be case only in the US? August 14, 201312 yr Author Also, someone has to decide what should be linked, and what should not, and then do it, and then face the complaints because other think they should have Linked this, and not that !! (ie this Topic ) My worry is not that FSX should not be linked but FSX should be too. When I hover my mouse over the FSX link I get a brief description of FSX, the rest is JustFlight add. So maybe these are sponsored links, given that 777 is about to be released? Now I don't have any complaint with Avsim policy,I never had one. I am VERY grateful for the free service I have enjoyed here for years! That is why I prefer to call it a worry, as I feel that FS9 still merits some recognition. Complaint is too strong a word. I agree that having any text cluttered up with automatic links can get annoying very quickly. Personally I would prefer NOT to have any automatic links at all. So if this is a way for avsim.com to generate some revenue, I am happy with it. I will just add manual FS9 links if I feel like it, I suppose. August 14, 201312 yr Ebay has copies too, but that is not what I mean. I'm sure you can find FS4 on sale somewhere if you look hard enough.
August 14, 201312 yr Author My worry is not that FSX should not be linked but FSX should be too. I meant FS9 should be too. What did you mean? It is available here regularly at one of the biggest software and media retailers in the flightsimming shelf, alongside FSX and X-Plane 10. People buy it too to enter the hobby because it is sold at a third of the price of FSX, and beginners sometimes even get mixed up with FSX, FSX Pro, FSX Gold and FSX Acceleration. So it's not a case of digging it up from the bargain bin. Regards, Sascha Rieger | EVO Developer What is EVO • How to get Evo 2016 • FS9 Evolution Forum
August 14, 201312 yr Personally I find unsolicited links intrusive. They are great in context e.g. the file you are downloading needs <Hyperlinked filename> to operate properly. Or if they expand on the context of the discussion e.g. see <Hyperlinked filename> for more information on widgets. But when they detract from what you are busy with, they become plain spam. Linking a generic word like FSX to a specific commercial product qualifies. Also the consumer wises up really quickly, and like with TV ads, learns simply to skip over them. What I'd like to see more of (and I imagine the likes of Google is working hard at) is tailored in-context marketing. I NEVER want to receive the latest FSX product news, for example. Someone should know this, and send me lots of http://secure.simmarket.com/fs2004-page-1.chtml'>FS9 stuff instead B)
August 15, 201312 yr I bought a spare set just the other day at a gaming shop in Greenacres Port Elizabeth ie FAPE!

August 16, 201312 yr You can still buy FS9 in the U.K. but how many copies left, I would hate to guess. Echofox
August 16, 201312 yr I think it might be because Avsim is also a huge advertisement platform for a lot of add-on developers, and as most payware add-on developers only develop for FSX, they'd like FSX to be more hyperlinked/promoted.
