i3770k vs 4770k

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I've been thinking about a future upgrade to the i4770k (currently I have an i2600k oc to 4.5), but then starting hearing about the 3770k as being almost identical in performance and capable of better overclocks. I also heard that the 4770k is not very able to oc well.

They seem to be pretty similar overall in pricing, so which would get me more mileage in fsx do you think?

Thanks,

Overclocking is not an exact science, but in general, the 3770K's can overclock a few hundred MHz higher than the 4770K. However individual chips vary, so you might get lucky (or unlucky) regardless of which model you buy. The IPC improvements of the Haswell architecture however are not dependent on luck... Also with the Z87 chipset you get more SATA3 and USB3 ports which does come in handy.

hi,

I have 2600k,3770k and the 4770 haswell. To be honest there is not much difference in clock speeds if that is what you want. The difference is the size of the chip and its structure,it can do more with less. The 4770 uses less volts but on overclock I would recommend a water cooler they do run hot.

For a really good comparison I suggest you look at tinytomlogan videos where he runs through all the ins and outs of the chips.I run the 3770k no overclock but I set the cpu voltage and the ram in bios so it runs stable, auto voltage is a no no.Hope this helps

You'll get more mileage, but not much, so is it really worth it for you?  I think you're looking at a 5% bump from SB>IB and ~10% from IB>H, so maybe a total of 15% or so improvement at the same clock speed, which sounds like you might be able to expect, i.e., 4.3-4.5Ghz.  So in your worst scenarios in FSX where you're seeing marginal frames of say 16 or so in the worst of settings, you're going to see 18-19 frames.  As you already know most of what you use FSX for works fine on your i2600k, so in some ways you are trying to bring up your worst performance, and worst + 15% is still....not very good!   Is it worth a whole new build for this sort of incremental jump?   Another option might be to scrutinize your settings and see if you can dial back a slider or two when you are in ultra-complex sceneries/airplanes--you likely won't notice it visually and will pick up the 15% you'll get w/ a whole new machine.  I have always avoided upgrades until I'm seeing at least a 50% bump.  Just went from Core 2 Quad at 3.7Ghz to SB-E hexacore at 4.4Ghz and couldn't be happier!  Perfect smoothness, superb image quality & texture update rates, total stability, low temps, low volts, in a word, simming Nirvana!  Do the 15% increase and you'll likely scratch your head about whether or not you've really done an upgrade!
