August 30, 201312 yr Regarding the reference to Sound Packs, personally I think the TSS HD ones on Simmarket are a bargain at 13 Euros.... I'm a sound sort of guy, and to get a massive uplift in sound realism, quality and immerison is an absolute bargain for 13 Euros.... When you consider that the high quality sound developers actually go on location to the real planes at airports etc, and use high end gear, 13 Euros really isn't overpriced.
August 30, 201312 yr Being a golfer as well as a simmer, prices really don't surprise me a bit. Developers have a good feel for your passion.

What about various racing sims that costs around 30-40 euros, and they ship with at least 7-8 car models with soundsets recorded on location with pro equipment? You get a complete simulation package for that money. Also there are mods for these racing sims which are FREEWARE, and they come with amazing sound packages, car models and especially physics. Racing sims are also a passionate hobby, and 99% of addons and mods for them are free. The difference is, the developers there didn't took the payware path from the start. Ok, you can't compare the complexity of cars and PMDG 737NGX, but amount of hours went to develop these mods is amazing, and all that for free. Think about it. August 30, 201312 yr Consider a scenario where a developer makes a livery for a small regional carrier in , say Cambodia. The livery may be McPhat quality, but who's gonna buy it? Not many! So it has to sell for a higher price compared what you pay at McPhat. If the potential customers don't shy away from the high price tag then all is well. If they do and nobody buys that livery then the developer may either try to sell it a lower price next time and not care about the low return for his work, or the morale would be not to make any future addons for such a limited market. Of course, that livery is not in the public domain. It belongs to the airline. If the airline is not claiming a copyright, it almost certainly is claiming it as a trademark. If the developer is playing by the rules, he has received permission from the airline to use its trademark, and may very well be paying a royalty to use the trademark. And if not, he is selling you a product which has been pirated. There may be little difference between selling that unauthorised copy of a livery and selling a pirated copy of a movie or a song. We are also dealing with price elasticity. Some products, like petroleum, are not price elastic, and people will pay whatever is being charged. Others, like this livery are probably very price elastic; a higher price results in significantly lower sales.

The point I was trying to make with the Cambodian livery is that some products will inherently appeal only to a very small segment of the market. So dropping the price lower and lower will at some point stop to attract more buyers. Even if the developer gave he livery away for free many people won't be interested in it. Hence the problem with those niche products: they are going to be more expensive unless the developer doesnt care about the money. Regards, Tom
