September 4, 201312 yr I'm ready to commit to xplane 10. I'm a current fs9 user. I won't go fsx, I believe it's false economy, it's an old program. Anyways, the point is, I need help. I'm about to buy my components. I need a good video card recommendation. I am gonna get the i7 4770k, and 8GB of ram (possible 32). Will this be good for xplane 10? Is it needed? I haven't July a PC since 2008......... Cheers, Ian!
September 4, 201312 yr I haven't July a PC since 2008......... My PC is also from 2008 and I'm flying with X-Plane 10 with great add-ons (but without HDR). Start testing the demo: http://www.x-plane.com/downloads/x-plane_10_demo/ What will be you GPU manufacturer in your new PC ? Having a good OpenGL driver is very important. September 4, 201312 yr I need a good video card recommendation. Unlike FS9 and FSX both of which are more CPU dependent, XP really uses both CPU/GPU, so in your case the i7 4470k (should oc easily) is a great choice (my personal choice). On the GPU, get the latest nVidia GTX with at least 2gig of vram that you can afford. With a combination of Intel/nVidia, one just can't go wrong! September 4, 201312 yr Author Really? I'm on a q6600 @3.4GhZ and a nvisia 8800GT 512mb with 4GM ram at the moment. I don't know, what's the best GPU to get?
September 4, 201312 yr I don't know, what's the best GPU to get? Well, it really all depends on how much you want to spend. If money is no object, then go with nVidia's GTX 680 or even the 690, both are very powerful but pricey. Let me point out that XP really likes vram so the more you have the better. Like I pointed out on my previous post, get one with a minimum of 2gig of vram. Windows 11 - Samsung 990 Pro M.2 | Asus Prime Z690 | i7 12700KF HT | DeepCool LS520 SE | MSI 5070 Ti Ventus OC | 64GB G.Skill XMP II | Lian Li 216 LANCOOL RGB | TrackIr v5 | Honeycomb Alfa - Bravo - Charlie | MSFS 2024 - Samsung 990 Pro M.2 | Curved 27" MSI | JBL Quantum 810
September 4, 201312 yr Really? I'm on a q6600 @3.4GhZ and a nvisia 8800GT 512mb with 4GM ram at the moment. I have more RAM (8Gb) but less GHz, just see my PC in the AVSIM profile. You can already use X-Plane with moderate settings, and you can try it using the free demo. My 512Mb 8800GT can display this (VRAM texture compression activated): http://forum.avsim.net/topic/417462-from-d%C3%BCren-to-metz-nancy-lorraine/ Of course, a new PC will enable you to improve some settings, activate HDR, and record HD videos with X-Plane... Georges - OpenStreetMap - Ubuntu GNU/Linux -
September 4, 201312 yr Author Wow, those screenshots are amazing! That looks good!! May I ask? Does that have autogen at lower altitudes? And, is that default xplane 10 in Europe?!
September 4, 201312 yr Really? I'm on a q6600 @3.4GhZ and a nvisia 8800GT 512mb with 4GM ram at the moment. HA . I also had a very similar CPU and the same GPU (bought in 2008), before buying my new PC when XP10 came out. Even with my old PC it was possible to fly XP10 with quite reasonable fps, but of course with lower settings. Apart from that, if you are looking for max. £200, I think a GTX670 with 2 GB VRAM might be a good solution. See also this benchmark page, as help for decision. My sceneries (excerpt): LPMA Madeira (XPFR), LGSR Santorini, LRBV Brasov, the city of Fürth (Germany), several libraries, ...
September 4, 201312 yr I think a GTX670 with 2 GB VRAM might be a good solution. I think so too. Based on his decision to buy the i7, he should consider getting something capable of handling the i7. I see no point of getting a powerful CPU that's throttling at 50% cause of the GPU not being able to keep up ending up as the bottleneck in the system. September 4, 201312 yr Author You guys mean like this one? (Btw this one has 4gb of ram?) http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/viewitem?itemId=390651280907
September 4, 201312 yr You guys mean like this one? Oh yeah, that definitely will work and should be able keep up with the i7. Plenty of vram too., Windows 11 - Samsung 990 Pro M.2 | Asus Prime Z690 | i7 12700KF HT | DeepCool LS520 SE | MSI 5070 Ti Ventus OC | 64GB G.Skill XMP II | Lian Li 216 LANCOOL RGB | TrackIr v5 | Honeycomb Alfa - Bravo - Charlie | MSFS 2024 - Samsung 990 Pro M.2 | Curved 27" MSI | JBL Quantum 810
September 4, 201312 yr Wow, those screenshots are amazing! That looks good!! May I ask? Does that have autogen at lower altitudes? And, is that default xplane 10 in Europe?! This is not "autogen" but 3D buildings converted from their OpenStreetMap footprints by OSM2XP. Ground textures are from SimHeaven.com and the updated roads and railways have been made with XPOSM. You can see more similar sceneries here: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/417362-the-new-diamond-da42-twin-star/ http://forum.avsim.net/topic/417033-flying-the-skymaster-update/ http://forum.avsim.net/topic/413399-cessna-c340-ii-by-carenado/ http://forum.avsim.net/topic/410246-mooney-v21-by-carenado/ http://forum.avsim.net/topic/404350-random-shots/ Sceneries like this need less resources than default sceneries. I have to reduce some settings for the default plausible world (number of buildings/objects and roads). If you can't afford a high end Nvidia GPU right now, why not waiting a few months and fly immediately with your current system ? Georges - OpenStreetMap - Ubuntu GNU/Linux -
September 5, 201312 yr Author I would love to! Ill go ahead and get the demo. Do you have a guide so that I can learn how to get my ground textures like that? Using the program's mentioned in your screenshots... Cheers!
September 5, 201312 yr X-Plane really looks amazing when you add orthophotos and 3D building generated by OSM2XP (Open Street Map 2 X-Plane). If you are trying out the Demo any scenery you add will only be limited to the Seattle Area. You should check out http://simheaven.de/ and download their OSM and Orthophoto sets. It really makes a huge difference in the sim's visuals.
