I watch a lot of that show Banged Up Abroad on YouTube and I can't get my head around why people would make terrible decisions like this. Great show if you get a chance to watch it.

If I remember correctly, they're running the new season now.  I've seen most of them too, but I do remember seeing new episodes recently.

 

As for the drug punishment in Colombia... This is taken directly from Wiki... In 1994, possession of 1 gram of cocaine was legalized for personal use.^[8][9] Sale remains illegal, but personal production or gifts of cocaine are permitted.

 

Believe it or not, a lot of the South American countries have eased their drug laws and it's working out better for them (lower crime rates, less users).  Even if all drugs are legalized around the world, the majority of cocaine would still come from Columbia.  Same reason we import coffee beans.
