Memory Speeds

Featured Replies

Hi

How would 2400MHz CL11 compare with 2133 MHz CL10 and CL9 in FSX's performance on an i7-4770K OC to 4.5 or 4.6 GHz.

I am considering a motherboard bundle with an i7-4770K OC to 4.6 GHz but the memory supplied is CL11 so I am thinking of changing it but 2400MHz at anything lower than CL11 doesn't seem to be readily available here yet.

Thanks

Phil

Hi Phil.

I heard this http://www.dabs.com/products/corsair-16gb--2-x-8gb--vengeance-pro-red-ddr3-2400mhz-cl10-8QJ2.html?refs=52270000-50113&catid=15006&src=3 was the memory to go for, but you only need 8 gb.

I'm thinking of upgrading my old 6 core gulftown system to a Haswell OC system but I'm not confident about OC. Where did you see that bundle you described??

In a double-blind, placebo controlled study...absolutely no perceptible difference ;o)

I agree fully. The difference is there but its small enough so only a benchmark would detect it. The 2400 CL11 would be the fastest, followed by the 2133 CL9 and finally 2133 CL10. But I wouldn't pay many $€£ more for any of the faster options if money was in short supply.

The CL number is just a number. You multiply it with 2000 and divide it with the speed to get what matters, latency in nano seconds.

Faster RAM can have higher CL number but still have shorter latency = better. Both latency (not CL number) and speed matters in FSX.

If the bundle is 2400 CL11 @ at good price. Go for it

After searching yesterday afternoon I found the formula SAAB340 refers to and came up with these calculations

2400 CL11 = 9.1 ns latency

2133 CL9 = 8.4 ns latency

2133 CL10 = 9.3 ns latency

I may well go for the bundle as they guarantee that the processor WILL OC to at least 4.6 and possibly higher so it may take the lottery out of purchasing a Haswell processor.

Thanks

Thanks for the info Phil, sounds like the 2133Mhz is just as good really.

I may opt for one of those bundles as well!!!

For those who haven't seen it:

http://forum.avsim.net/topic/412163-the-impact-of-different-ram-speeds-and-timings-in-fsx

There you can see how much (or little) impact different RAM speeds and timings have. Only pay a lot more to get a small improvement in timing or speed if you want to have the best at any cost as it will only show whilst benchmarking.

Saab, it's appears HIGHER latency is producing lower frame rate which goes against everything we've heard, no?

Yes Noel. Higher latency (worse) will give you lower FPS. That's as it should be. I' sure you already knew that. =)

Haha that's bizarre of course I knew that but interpolated it when I looked at the chart!

From my experience clockspeed matters more than the CL number. I don't know why.

I mean, why else would they sell 1600 CL8 and 2400 CL11 while their latencies are both pretty much the same?

Both matters. The problem is that while they have managed to increase the speed significantly, the latency of RAM modules has remained almost the same for a long time. When it comes to latency, CL12 @ 2400 = CL8 @ 1600 = CL4 @ 800 = CL2 @ 400.
