At my wit's end. Black screen in DX10

Featured Replies

Hi Forum,

I'm simply at my wit's end after trying to get DX10 working for the past three days. Under DX9 everything was just peachy, but I was intrigued by what I have heard and seen about and with DX10. So I got Steve's Fixer, applied it, started up a flight and only got a black screen. Sound, the mouse and cockpit hotspots showed up - but nothing else.

In the meantime I've "repaired" Acceleration, let the fsx.cfg rebuild itself, re-downloaded and installed my nvidia drivers (I currently have 320.18 running for my GTX580), set my graphics to the absolute minimums. Unchecked the shaders in the fix. Nothing. Black screen with the Trike at Friday Harbor every time. Now and then I switched back to DX9 and the normal view was there. Then back again via the fix to DX10 and into darkness...

Let the cfg rebuild itself again and switched to and fro

Here are some more system specs:

i7 3770 @ 3,4 GHz, 8 GB DDR3 1600, Corsair H60 cooling, Samsung 840 Series 240 GB SSD dedicated to FSX, Gainward GTX 580 1,5 GB, Win 7 64 Bit, Saitek X52 Pro, TrackIR 5

I did have FXAA running under DX9, but I cleared out those files from the FSX folder.

Any hints (except for a complete re-install of FSX) ^_^ would be greatly appreciated.

Mallard

PS - I wanted to upload my cfg, but the forum won't allow that - so here's a "copy"

I had the same experience the first time i

installed it. I installed it in a directory outside the default allthough i dont know if it was problem. Do you also have lost the DX10 check button inside FSX? i had downloaded the originale SHADERSLHL when the problem starts but i went back with my 3.2.2 version again after a uninstall and everything was back to normal. Then i installed again in the default directory and for some reason i dont know only water was greyed out and everything just in order. Michael

FSX is on its own drive. And the fix found it there. I have no problems switching between 9 and 10 either with the fix or the check button in FSX...

I have tried both the default SHSL and the one found in the stickky post here in the forum.

Cheers

Well, some odd settings in your fsx.cfg. I'll show them but first the recommendation to delete or rename the fsx.cfg file and start your FSX. This will create a new cfg-file. Set then DX10 and try again without any changes, maybe only set the monitor to the right resolution. I guess you should see more as only a black screen.

Here the odd settings.

TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=512                    <------ better at least 1024

MultiSamplesPerPixel=8                           <------- better 4
MultiSampleQuality=24                             <------- better 16

Just saw these setting in a quick look at your cfg and I don't know if this can have a black screen effect.

Try to start with a fresh cfg-file, maybe it helps.

I was talking about the Fixer were it installs. I was forcing it to install outside programfilesx86 but now i am back with default.

Do you have more than one monitor? Double check screenresolution in FSX. CFG with your actually resolution just to be sure

Hi Spirit,

complete new cfg. No luck.

Hi Michael,

thanks for the tip. Un- and re-installed the fixer to the x86 (it was on my dedicated drive). No luck. I have only one monitor and tried about every resolution that is offered by fsx and - yes I did notice some differences from time to time. But mostly they were as they should be.

Btw. Do you have the uiautomationcore.dll in your FSX directory?

Quickly put highmemfix in there...

No - got rid of that because I had problems with it some while back...

HIGHMEMFIX is the most important additiv to fsx. cfg.

I can see your running 1280X720.if you have a 16:9 set widewiewaspect to true.

Are you 100 procent that the resolution you are running in Windows is 1280X720? Has to be the same

The cfg in the first post was a new one that I made this morning. I always have the highmem fix in it (along with the bufferpools) - except for the one here, obviously. After about the 10th or 12th complete new cfg rebuild that slipped through and I simply forgot to put it in again... Sorry.

And as I mentioned before - I tried each and every screen resolution FSX has to offer.

Under DX9 I was running the PMDG 737 and loads of other taxing planes (like the Super80 Pro), had tons of ORBX and other scenery with really heavy settings, REX at full blast with all the bells and whistles - and that took ages to set up so that everything was working as it should be. But obviously there is something - probably just one simple setting - which prevents all of that showing up in DX10 again...

Cheers

Mallard

Do you still get the black screen? Because that sounds to me like you have files of the ENB-series or a similar mod still in your FSX directory. Shade and SweetFX work perfectly in DX10, but ENB-series and another one (can't remember the name) ONLY work in DX9 and those can give problems like a black screen when starting in DX10 mode. So please scan you FSX root map for remaining .DLL's.

Mark

Yes it is frustrating when FSX seems to take all the time for troubleshooting instead of flying. Believe me i have been there to. Had a heartattack when my screen went black. When you find the solution remember to make a system image.

Did you check uiautomationcore.dll in your FSX directory?

I originally had FXAA, but since that only workes up to DX9 I switched to SweetFX. No ENBs.

I'll re-check that everything FXAA related is gone, but I'm pretty sure that that I got rid of it. I had the unzipped installation folder open and compared it with what was in the FSX folder. But something may have slipped through...

Cheers

Mallard

By the way. A repair of the Acceleration doesn't do so much. One step deeper would be to deinstall the Acc package and repair FSX itself. The procedure is the same like installing it new but you'll be asked if you want to repair. I had some bigger issues with FSX and that helped me and after this install ACC again. You may have to reinstall some little things but the most stuff was working. The DX10 fix is gone too so you've to do it again.

Spirit

Do you have SweetFX installed?  I have found with my setup that this causes black screens, just a thought.
