September 23, 201312 yr Hi, I had my first ever crash today descending to an overcast Glasgow for an ILS23 aproach at 2900 feet when traffic was in deadly conflict and i was hearing descend descend and then i crashed in to an hill when the autopilot disconnected by my move forward of the yoke. So does this TA/RA not take Terrain into considuration or is it just a "not simulated" event in FSX ? Because of the overcast i was not aware of the hills but i believe they were in the green area at the time being in the TERRAIN mode. September 23, 201312 yr Commercial Member So does this TA/RA not take Terrain into considuration or is it just a "not simulated" event in FSX ? Resolution advisories only coordinate between aircraft. One of the reasons a pilot is up front is to interpret and act according to the situation. The transponder only knows the information it's been given: you're close to another aircraft and that other aircraft will be doing X. Additionally, the TA/RA mode will drop to TA only at a certain point for similar reasons to what you experienced. TCAS is not an all-knowledgeable system that knows what you should do in all circumstances. In fact, controllers blasted early implementations because they were actually creating more of a conflict than avoiding it. Kyle Rodgers
September 23, 201312 yr I've always had proper resolution advisories, so that's odd. In either case, at 2900 ft on approach I would definitely think twice about performing a quick descending avoidance maneuver. Dave Wegner - Don't be afraid of common sense or the search function.
September 23, 201312 yr Author Thanks. Well we were very very close so for fun i took it to the last option to learn he he. As i recall minimum safe altitude from east and south was 3000 which seems low thinking of those hills. Will test again tomorrow if weather is better. Thanks Kyle Michael Moe
September 23, 201312 yr Descend Descen..*woop woop* Pull Up. Eye on the Nav display, There's a good reason to have your Terrain data and Tcas displayed on ND when below 10,000ft AGL (or all the time!) When climbing will smack you into another aircraft and descending will smack you into a hill, it's time to get creative. Computer's don't do creative very well. TCAS doesn't know what "left" or "Right" is when giving a resolution advisory for instance... sometimes turning might be the only way out. Certainly descending to 0ft with the gear up isn't a good idea. Pushing the yoke with your hand will disconnect autopilot. So you can't blame the disconnected Autopilot for pushing you into the ground. TCAS doesn't care about anything except traffic. Weather isn't traffic, the ground isn't traffic, traffic without an operating transponder isn't traffic....
