Polar Flight

Featured Replies

Just a quick question... Is polar flight actually possible within the world of FSX? I ask as a search on Google gives me no results with the answer I'm looking for. E.g. a flight from Toronto to Hong Kong.

Thanks a bunch.

No, you can't really do it in a realistic manner. The FSX world becomes like a Bermuda Triangle once you get close to the poles.

I've had no problems flying over the north pole and have landed at South Pole Station a few times. The ground graphics at the south pole are pretty strange, and at both poles the clouds are squashed. Expect the GPS to look a bit strange.

But the bottom line is, you can overfly the poles with no problems other than the cloud squashing.

I did a little test earlier, threw myself to near the North pole and just flew 'north', but I hit a snag and experience the effect Simmerhead mentioned. Do you mind sharing an example route from your North Pole route?

For the south pole, I set up a GPS flight from NZIR to NZSP. NZSP is not exactly at the pole. If you attempt the flight, good luck finding the actual airstrip; the graphics are a bit bizarre.

I don't remember exactly how I set up the north pole flight. If I can find screen shots, I'll let you know.

Hm. How did you get it to fly north? The north magnetic pole is nowhere near the geographic pole.

I've visited both the magnetic and geographic poles both north and south.

Guess you can use GPS to fly North. Compass is a struggle long before you get close to the pole.

I had no problems when I used a PFPX-generated route from Dubai to Los Angeles on the PMDG 777

Flown polar routes all the time. No issues here.
