How to run different FSX configurations

Featured Replies

I'd like to give a shout out to simlauncher. This is a brilliant little launcher that supports fsx and p3d. It can manage multiple configurations for you and contains handy shortcuts for changing ftx regions, as well as set up and launch new or saved flights. It is my main launch platform for simming.

You guys lost me a long time ago. I have certain settings I use for ORBX and different settings for Mega Earth.  After I get the settings right for ORBX I  Copy the FSXexe. file , then re-name the new one ( maybe call it - ORBX CONFIG. ).Then I go back to FSX Settings , adjust it for Mega Scenry, copy FSX exe.( then call it Mega Config), is that right?

You need to run each newly named copy of FSX.exe for it to create the FSX CFG file with the name you appended to FSX_xxx.exe. I would make a copy of your current CFG file for each new name so your basic cettings remain enchanged. Otherwise the new FSX EXE's  will create a new, pristine CFG file when first run that 'version'.

I would do this and than make the setup changes so they get stored with the new CFG file(s)..

I have a different method that allows me to run multiple fsx installs at the same time - I copy the various config directories back into the FSX folder, and then place symlinks where those directories used to be.  I then copy the full FSX install a few times, giving each it's own unique folder name, and presto - currently I have three separate functioning FSX installs, one optimized for photoscenery, one for FTXG, and one being a purely vanilla backup that I can compare stuff in or copy fresh from if I care to.

Complex, but it works a treat for me. B)

Searching the forum and came across you post... I made a complete copy of my FSX directory onto my F: drive a few months back (I run FSX from my E: drive). I now find myself in a situation where I want to run from the earlier snapshot in order to troubleshoot a problem.

Could your approach allow me to do this? I have a basic understanding of symbolic links but I'm not sure how to 'orchestrate' it.

Thanks - Brian
