How do views work?

Featured Replies

As an X-Plane user, I'm trying to figure out how the views work in FSX. Let me explain how I've set this up in X-Plane, and I hope there is an equivalent FSX way of doing things. I've printed out an FSX Keyboard Commands sheet and tried all the funky Ctrl-Shift-T and whatnots, but couldn't get it do what I want. :(

To explain, I'm always in what I believe FSX calls Virtual Cockpit view (F9). I can pan around with my hat switch as I'm used to. So far, I've been unable to assign a key to "reset my view," so to speak.

X-Plane way (Ctrl saves a view):

Set your forward cockpit view, press Ctrl+Numpad5 (also saved to a joystick button).

Set your left cockpit view, press Ctrl+Numpad4

Set your right cockpit view, press Ctrl+Numpad 6

Of course, I've set more, for things like overhead panel, but you get the idea.

Now, after that's been done I can pan whereever I want, but when I press Numpad5, my view goes back to looking forward. Numpad 4 left and Numpad 6 left. I'm not interested in outside views, I'm just looking for a way to set predefined views to easily navigate the cockpit. How can I achieve the same thing in FSX?

Wheelcam can store user-defined views.

You can then navigate them via the right click menu or by pressing A or S.

Ouch, German ...

Can you also assign specific keys to specific views?

Brazen, FSX has this built right in already, and can be assigned right in the controls menu.

Try a website translator of your choice. It should work.

No, you can't.

No, you can't.

Ah, that was a requirement of mine.

Thanks, though!

Hey Richard,

Would you be willing to help me with this? So far, I've been unable to figure this out. :(

Sure mate... All you need to do is go into the "Controls" section of FSX from the main screen and within the buttons/keys page, assign whichever buttons/keys you want to the views it has listed in that menu.

So under "FSX > Settings > Buttons/Keys" > select "views" from the "Event category" dropdown menu and you should see all the existing views, and the keys already assigned to them.

You can change these just by double clicking any of them and pressing your new chosen key/button/combo..

I hope that helps mate?

Man, this is really difficult for me. What I want is what I stated in my first post. It might have been unclear, so let me try this again.

Let's keep this simple and define only one view: Left, looking out the window in Virtual Cockpit (3D) view. In other words, I pan the view to the left using my joystick's hat switch and change the Eye Point view (shift+backspace etc) until it's just right for me. So far, so good, but ...

How do I save that view and assign it a hotkey, so I can instantly call it back?

There is already a "look left" hotkey within FSX, so you can just use that, but I dont think you can store eye-point views at all.

We know what your asking, its clear to us, and has already been answered, you cannot create and store custom views within FSX to assign to hotkeys.

Something like eZdok looks like it can do this... Thats an addon for FSX.

Where has it been answered? o.O

Anyway, thanks, I'll look into eZdok.

YouTube'd it, bought it, tested it. This was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

Interesting thread....  I came from FSX to XP10 (well I'm using XP10 about 20% of my total flightsim time) and I thought the key assignments were a major PITA in XP10 LOL!  They really seem to be different between sims.  I think this is a major reason why more people don't switch and or use both sims.

Anyway, glad you got it sorted, and good luck setting up Ezdok... I dont use it as I just use the standard FSX views and either my hat switch or TrackIR or both together..

Actually, that was in response to the German program Wheelcam.

I really like EZdok, as I can disable TrackIR for certain views.
