I installed DX10 fixer, but, well,...

 

Let me start at the beginning.

 

I was running DX9 beautifully, but always wanted to run DX10.  Could NEVER get it to work even unsing Steve's guides and others.  Close, but no cigar.  Sorry, Bill (Clinton).

 

Meanwhile, running a Core i7 2600K OC'd to 5.6GHz, great video, 32 Gb RAM, fast mobo, and FSX on it's own SSD.  One fast machine.  I had 2 Radeon 6870's running in Crossfire, and one went tango uniform.  Sent back to XFX, and they graciously sent me a new Ghost series 7870 2Gb card.  Nice, but my Crossfire just went out the window.

 

So, running the single card, bought and installed DX10 Fixer.  It fixed some things, knackered others; lots of jaggies on surfaces and external views, flashes, greyouts, and shimmering on the MFDs.  Rats.

 

On the advice of a friend on the forum, went out and dropped serious change on a nVIDIA 780GTX video card.  Everything was kinda better, but not.

 

Then, one of the DVI ports on the card went out and I returned the card.  Bought a 760 GTX and will purchase another one or two to run in SLI. 

 

Now, everything looks kinda "meh".  Not DX9 at it's best, but not DX10 at it's worst either.  Smooth, framerates are good, but annoying flashes and flickers.

 

So I said to myself, "Self, you're an idiot.  The FSX platform is 32-bit and you should be crunching numbers better.  So, updated my BIOS and popped in a Core i7 3770K OC'd to 4.6GHz.  Umm, this box is FAST, like a US Congressman running from the media right now.

 

Still, looks are "meh". 

 

"Dayton Ground, Delta 738 at Alpha 15 with information Bravo".   "Delta 738, Ground, go ahead".  "Ground, Delta 738, requesting clearance to punch my computer, I mean, my first officer in the face".  "738, Ground, clearance denied, expedite a deep breath and squawk 7700 ..."

 

So, here I am declaring an IFE and 7700 is on the transponder...  Please assist!

Finally, in DX9, I was able to undock my CDU and drag it to my 10" tough screen for use as a real cheap tactile universal FMS.  Now it goes black and my mouse cursor gets strange symbology, game hangs, and is generally $#!}{ after this, so can't do that any longer. Would like to fix this as well. 

 

I know the config is shot.  Can we please start there?

I have Nvidia Inspector, but haven't tweaked it on this card.

 

ALSO, can someone please tell me how to run AS2012, REXe, Opus, etc at startup all at the same time and have it all work "right"?  I'd like to have beautiful skies and not this brain aneurysm waiting to happen that I have now.

It was initially for the DX10 patch system, but all of the setup, including the Inspector settings are still valid, and should be followed. One hint, Kevin: - when you want folks to look at your config - it's most often the best case to use the "More Reply Options" at the bottom-right corner of the posting window as a means to include/attach your fsx.cfg, suitably renamed, perhaps as "Kevin_fsx.txt".

NOT fat fingers, I'll thank you very much. Lots and lots of patience with my ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z mobo and very incremental tweaking. And lots of youtube watching. Took about a month. 4.6 was easy. 5.2 was a little quirky, but would boot 99% of the time. I had a special profile on the BIOS for everything past 5.4. I would just run the two SSD's when running these two profiles and no other drives. 5.6 would only boot about 50% of the time. Every process shut down but FSX-related items and core processes using Alacrity PC. Oh, 8 fans plus water cooling on the CPU only. Strangely, a friends almost identical setup would never get past 4.7.

 

I think I still have a screenie of CPU-Z at 5.6. If I can find it after I get off this two-month road trip I'll post it up. It was a real PITA to accomplish.

What are you cooling it with? I'm using an EK Nickel and the big pump w/triple rad... sits at 54c on load ibt/p95, etc..  Are you still at 5.6?  wow. 

Actually, I sent my screenie to ASUS and they were impressed as well.  I used a Corsair H110 to cool it set at max fan and pump speed.

 

Mind you that the mobo got blistering hot and the system would BSOD without warning, so it wasn't "optimal".  My wife would walk by the system to feed our saltwater tank and complain about "the blowtorch effect" from the two graphics cards and the fans from the hydro cooler.  Since I went back to using a platter-type HDD as my D:\User root, best I can do is 5.2.

 

Now, with the 3770K, 4.2 and 4.3GHz without any real heating issues was as simple as pushing a button, really nice.  I'm going to go for 4.6-4.8 on the 3770K and see how stable it is.  I understand that running at about 4.7GHz on a 3770K is equal to about 5.6-5.8K on a 2600/2700K Sandy Bridge.  Please keep in mind that I'm running my 3770K on a Sandy Bridge board.
