Need to set ILS freq when using FMC?

Featured Replies

Having fun with the 737 that I just purchased! I downloaded my first flight plan from SimBrief and figured out how to get the FMC to load it. I am new to this FMC stuff and flight plans but I got enough of it to work that the plane actually flew the route (KORD => KJFK). I guessed at an approach, ILS 4R.

When I got near JFK the plane did everything once I reset the MCP Altitude. The plane came in for a perfectly aligned landing on 04R. The only problem is I guess I did something wrong and the plane was going to fly over the runway at like 50'. I am sure it was pilot error. (I have only gone through Tutorial 1 once).

But my question is the plane came in great on 4R even though I never touched or programed the ILS freq for 4R.

So when using an approach in the FMC does one have to enter the ILS of the runway? DId I get lucky or was it somehow set by something else or maybe did I select a visual on 4R?. I don't know. Thanks for any help.

You may(!) have performed a RNAV/IAN approach.

Tuning the ILS frequency is good airmanship, as it backs up any instrument or visual approach. On the 737NG the frequency has to be tuned in the VOR receivers directly. The FMC can neither autotune nor remote-tune it.

What happened to AVSIM

When using the FMC to fly the plane, you have to input the ILS frequency for the landing runway into both Navigation Radios. You can get that information from the Approach Ref page of the FMC.  However, I don't think the FMC can put the frequency in automatically.  I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong.  Although, like the man said....I would always make sure the correct ILS frequency was selected to be on the safe side.

On the 737 there is no NAVRAD page on the FMC where tuning will be don automatically like the 777 or 747-400, you have to tune the ILS freq manually on both NAV control panels ( located on the aft control stand) and set the correct runway course on the MCP also in both Windows. When that is set correctly than press LOC mode on the MCP to intercept the runway localizer. When localizer is intercepted press the APP mode on the MCP to intercept the glideslope than press the second A/P CMD mode to do a Autoland.

You said you did Tutorial I, but Tutorial I explains the ILS and tells you to tune both NAV radios.

By "impossible to act on fmc" you mean what? changing to another app or rwy? This is an ILS thread, does it has to do with your issue?
