There have been a few threads lately, where we've analyzed ourselves, as a community and as individuals, how we behave on the forums etc, sometimes we are hard on ourselves, because let me tell you, over the last couple of weeks - even as an 'experienced' simmer - this community has saved my bacon so many times with tweaks fixes and tips.

When I bought and installed P3D 2.0 this morning, I saw great potential but the sim was unusable to me, because of :-

  • The Cursor not working on any clickspots or controls
  • The Black Screen - I couldn't even see P3D at all, during my first 3 launches!
  • No FSUIPC, and I heavily use it for custom assignments.
  • 9 FPS in the default situation with the defaul settings

I was gutted, and quickly dashed back to FSX for a flight in the Carenado PA46-350P to cheer myself up!

Now.............. 12 hours later  :-

  • The Cursor bug has a workaround and is causing no more issues
  • The Black Screen has a workaround and is causing just a minor inconvenience, but no longer a showstopper
  • FSUIPC is installed and working perfectly
  • Amazing FPS and smoothness, even with high settings

Now no disrespect to LM; they've given us a beautiful sim and we now have a bright future - but all of the above fixes were gained through the FS community pulling together, and working hard to find answers and workarounds.   I know LM will build on this with some permanent fixes.

This morning I almost deleted P3D 2.0 .......... now, 12 hours later, I may soon consider deleting FSX.    Going back to "old faithful" after experiencing those amazing VC shadows in P3D2 was painful.......  (as well as lower FPS).

So hold your head up high AVSIM and the wider FS community - we're actually pretty bloody clever sometimes!

Great post!!! I can't wait to join you when I get a new machine and video card.

Hey Dillon,

I'm using a pretty modest ATI card;  HD 7850 2GB and seeing results far better than I'd ever hoped, in P3D2.  I'm limiting the shadows to VC only, but aside from that, I'm almost maxed out and seeing superb performance.   So although a $40 GPU clearly isn't going to cut it, I don't think you need a Titan to get great results from this sim.

Great post.. Also a thanks to the Avsim staff for keeping the Prepar3D forum B.S. free. Day 1 was a little sketchy early in release but all went quiet with the bickering and stupid B.S. disappeared and stopped pretty fast... This forum (Prepar3D section) has really turned itself around leading up to release and after it too!

I think you are right. I have a feeling that your experience is exactly what LM had in mind when they decided to open P3D to "simulation" users. Having lots of smart, serious aviation and simulation users now will help identify bugs and fixes that will make the product much better.
