Avsim on smartphone very compressed

Featured Replies

The avsim front page looks very compressed when viewed on a smartphone screen. The two sidebars appear ok but the two central columns are very narrow and hard to read. It's odd that the main content suffers at the expense of the sidebars.

For some reason the page cannot be zoomed or scrolled laterally, either of which would solve the problem. Rotating to landscape view makes little difference, the sidebars still dominate.

I'm currently using Safari on an iPhone 5s but there were similar zoom and scroll problems with avsim when I used Dolphin on an android phone.

Go to the bottom of any page, click on CHANGE THEME and then click on AVSIM MOBILE. Your problems will be taken care of. Or, load up TAPATALK.

Or, load up TAPATALK.

Thanks for that. I just noticed on the Google Store that Tapatalk is now free on Android as well as iOS.

It's the mobile version which is the problem. The browser automatically used it. As I said earlier, the mobile version won't zoom and the central news column is very narrow.

If I choose the full version the page is displayed better although the boxed news items are shown staggered, not side by side. It's not ideal but at least you can zoom in and read the news items properly.

I use tapatalk for the forum of course, but I don't see how I can read the news page with it.

Eh, Tom, I'm not sure if it's me, but I've had today issues trying to load Avsim forums in Tapatalk: I'm always getting "failed to connect with forum". This in both of my Android devices.

Luis, we just updated TapaTalk because it was creating a lot of our time out issues. You should be getting better service now on Tapatalk, not worse. Everything seems to be working from our end. Try resyncing or whatever it is called in that service.

Hi Tom

I'm having the same issue Luis was having. Whenever I search for the forums I get 3 results, 2 for AVSIM and 1 for some Russian AVSIM...? See pics:

Is there any chance someone from Avsim would give an answer to the point I raised in the opening post (which was not about the Avsim forums and therefore not relating to Tapatalk).

I did answer your question. You just didn't like the answer (about the mobile theme). The front page, which is what I believe you are referring to, is not designed to be "squeezed" into a mobile phone's display area, and we are not going to redesign it to do so.

Tom, I didn't like your first answer because you missed the point entirely. In fact you seemed to think I was referring to the avsim forum as you suggested I use Tapatalk (when it's clear in the signature that's exactly what I was using to post). You still don't seem to get the point I was making in this reply either.

The central columns may not be designed to be squeezed, but that's exactly how they appear in the browser. At the moment the mobile theme makes the sidebars wider and so more readable than the main page content, which seems the wrong way around. Also the zoom function seems to be disabled on the two browsers I've used (Dolphin for Android and Safari for iOS7).

See the images below of the mobile site in portrait and landscape. Landscape gives you the full width of the site, portrait allows you to scroll laterally. The two news columns are compressed into approximately the same width as each sidebar. This leaves room for only one or two words per line which isn't very readable. In contrast, on the full version of the site each of the news columns is wider than the sidebar.  Perhaps if the news was shown in a single column in mobile theme it might work better?
