January 18, 201412 yr Hi everybody, I barely fly my sim anymore because when I do manage to find some precious time, it's full of frustration with FSX CTDs on Win 8.1. I'm thinking of getting P3D v2 but want to make sure I don't end up with the same troubles. I don't use too many addons other than the Aerosoft Airbus Extended, REX textures and weather, and hopefully RCv4 if it works ok. Am I likely to make a successful 2+ hour flight? Also any improvements in wind smoothing? Thanks!
January 19, 201412 yr I don't use the Airbus and so can't speak to that. However, I do use Win 8.1. I would say that P3D is certainly more stable than FSX. I very rarely have a CTD, which was a regular occurrence with FSX. OOMs, however, are somewhat more common with P3D unless you set autogen to dense and other sliders at sensible levels. That is being addressed in the patch that LM is releasing next week or so. I'd say, definitely go for it. You won't regret it. I still marvel at the ability to fly for an hour plus with no CTD and much smoother in general than FSX. Things will only get better as LM fixes some of the inevitable bugs and continues to add performance improvements.
January 19, 201412 yr Don't remove your FSX. Keep it and install P3D v2 as well. For me, FSX (DX10) is more stable. But with keeping the slider to "Dense" I have avoided the dreaded OOMs P3D v2 which was unusable prior to doing that. I love the P3Dv2 dawn and dusk skies..they are spectacular. The weather also looks awesome in P3D V2. hopefully after the fix, some of the water issues (blending of Photoscenery water anf P3D v2 water issues would be gone. Not sure if they are adding the wave froth animation. So yeah...keep both..until you can decide for yourself. The only airliner I got working reasonably well ijn P3D V2 is Aerosofts Airbus. Aerosofts Twotter works fine too. Most of the other aircrafts I bought over from FSX errors out for me. I need to figure out how others have migrated their aircrafts over. January 21, 201412 yr Author Thanks everybody. I went ahead and got P3D v2 based on the fact that I can return it if there are problems. So far it's way better than FSX in Windows 8.1 FSX had become completely unusable - I'm not sure that it would have been possible to get it stable. I had done the uiautomationcore.dll fix and some others, but it was kind of hopeless. Currently P3D is working well although I had some issues to start with the "black screen" problem. If I keep P3D full screen and stay away from alt+enter (instead use alt+tab or win+m) things are working well. I definitely looks much better and seems smoother too. Unlikely to be returning it.
January 21, 201412 yr De-select Mipmap in the display option and that will take care of the black screen issue. This has been addressed and fixed in the upcoming 2.05 update. Here is a link to the issues fixed and/or being worked on. http://www.prepar3d.com/forum-5/?mingleforumaction=viewtopic&t=4373 Quite an impressive response to issues from the LM P3D team, IMHO! Lyn
