January 22, 201412 yr I am in DX10 mode using Steve's Fixer and as he noted the Tool Tips is non functional so I downloaded the small program he said that fixes it but it doesn't say what to actually do with it other than you also have to download a Hot Key program as well. What exactly do you do with these 2 programs? Thanks.
January 22, 201412 yr It doesn't really fix it: the problem is that the tooltips won't work in full screen mode, only in windowed mode. However, some people don't like windowed mode and for that you can use the 'fix': you should install that HotKey program and then run that "small program" with it (which is actually a file made for that hot key program): it will make FSX run in a pseudo-fullscreen mode (you can toggle it with a shortcut). It will look as fullscreen but it is in fact windowed mode without any borders. And since the tooltips work in windowed mode, they will also work in this pseudo-fullscreen mode. However, performance may drop and vsync can be problematic.
January 22, 201412 yr Author Ok I'll take a look at that. I'm starting to get the feeling that the DX10 is more trouble than it's worth. My sim looked pretty good and trouble free in DX9. My thought is if DX10 was indeed that much better then why isn't everybody using it?
January 22, 201412 yr why isn't everybody using it? Why isn't everybody using FSX? Why isn't everybody using REX? I'll give you a couple of reasons, if you need them. 1). ..because it's a new sim, as the graphics engine is different, and it takes work. People are afraid of the unknown. People are fed up with tweaking. One needs to read a good amount of documentation - and also understand what one is reading. DX9 is very "flexible", being tolerant of very "wide" settings. DX10 is not like that, with most changes being immediately noticeable. Properly configured and optimized, DX10 performs better, being able to handle heavier loads than DX9 - this being due to moving all graphics processing to the GPU, thus giving the CPU a shot in the arm. When making the decision to move to DX10, one has to "suck it up" and ask for help. Some people won't do that, and drop into #2). below. 2). Peer pressure. The forums are home to many negative personalities who are resistant to change, or are afraid of "something new", and will poo-poo anything gnew just to make "their opinion" public - and, believe it or not - these people have a following. "I tried it and it didn't work for me". I have seen this so many times. The reason for it is 1). above. The DX10 Scenery Fixer is still in the Top Ten in sales over at the FS Store, and has been there for months. Sales are now in the thousands. You don't have to jump on the bandwagon, BogeyFree. I've been on it since Steve began exploring the problems with DX9, nearly eighteen months ago, and will never go back to DX9. Shortly after that the first DX10 patch came out, and he has been consistenly fixing and adding enhancements to the sim ever since. Read the success stories.....but you don't have to jump on the bandwagon. January 22, 201412 yr I never understood the problem with windowed mode - it makes a second monitor usable for charts and checklists and things, plus it gets rid of any vsync issues on Windows 7 as long as you also run Aero after FSX stopped it (why it does that I've never understood either). Here is a handy little tool that makes windowed FSX behave just like it's running full screen, i.e. it gets rid of the title bar. It also can do other nifty things if you want it to, e.g. stop time acceleration our pause the sim on ATC messages: http://www.friendlyflusi.at/index.php?page=Thread&postID=127639

Ok I hear ya and am willing to work on it for better results if I can just get rid of the Kernelbase.dll problem which I need to focus on. I also like my Tool Tips too and need to get that back. My PC specs are under my avatar. Do you see any red flags there that might be a problem with DX10?
January 23, 201412 yr Good man! Did you look at the responses in the Kernelbase error? That is a tough one. No - a 950 at 4.3 is pretty good for that proc: nice processor, and good cooling will allow 4.45, but it can get warm.... All the best, pj i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
January 23, 201412 yr Author I'm still working on the Kernelbase thing. Most of the things In the site that JIm suggested either don't apply or I have already tried - and before I to a total reformat and wipe everything clean l'll live with a periodic Kernelbase error. First thing I'll do is reinstall the Fixer. I'll be away all next week in the sunny Caribbean so it may have to wait until I get back.
January 23, 201412 yr Paul, just wanted to say I couldn't agree more about your thoughts from dx9 to dx 10 and Steve's fixer. Also with the combination of Rex4 Direct for me personally it has taken fsx into a different sim. I have been using fsx since 98, but the changes made, with the combination of these 2 programs, mentioned above, I will never and ever go back to dx9. Just wanted to throw my 2 cents out there.
January 23, 201412 yr Author I'm just using the standard FSX weather. Will that be compatible with DX10?
January 23, 201412 yr Yup - no problems with the default weather, and you'll find that you can coffigure it as you wish - even to setting the dew point, which will affect visibility and make for some very nice (or nasty!) IFR flying. Enjoy the Islands! pj i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
January 23, 201412 yr Author Paul - please see my Bufferpools question over on my Kernelbase thread. Thanks.
December 8, 201510 yr It doesn't really fix it: the problem is that the tooltips won't work in full screen mode, only in windowed mode. However, performance may drop and vsync can be problematic. I tried using that program with Win7 64-bit -- when I hit Win+F11 with any other window, it does as you describe; when I try it with the FSX window, however, it does absolutely nothing. Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong? James David Walley Ryzen 7 7700X, 32 GB, RTX 3080
