Learning to fly the PMDG 737

I want to learn how to fly the PMDG 737 and/or 777.  I've been flying mostly small bush planes in P3D/FSX and am not at all proficient at IFR.  So how does a person with a full-time job and a wonderful wife (who isn't a flight sim fan) manage to learn to fly one of these beasts?  Do I need to master IFR flight in GA aircraft, master multi-engine aircraft, etc. before I tackle the best tubeliners?  I also have the Flight1 King Air,  the Majestic MJC8 Q400 and the Aerosoft A320/321 (don't ask - my eyes are much bigger than my stomach when it comes to flight simming) - are these appropriate intermediate steps on the way to the PMDGs?

Any and all advice is appreciated...

Thanks in advance,

Scott

I would say u fit the same description time wise as I did.

1. You don't need to master anything before NGX if this is your way to go except rod machiado flying school in Cessna.

2. Read introduction and fcom/fctm when on long cruise.

3. Fly first tutorial

4. Fly second if you want to go deeper

5. You're good to go.

It took me few days to learn basics (2-3 hours a day) and after 2 weeks I was going from cld and dark to shutdown performing gentle landings in the meantime. But as I am default ATC fan I don't use exact real world procedures, still getting lot of fun and immersion. Add fs2crew so you don't have to push all of the buttons and can talk to your crew - immersion guaranteed.

That's at least how I did that.

I'm getting 777 as soon as fs2crew is released for it :)

Oh and before anyone asks, I mentioned flying school mainly because it helps you learn navigation. Nothing better than performing VOR approach without autopilot on some airport in mountains in NGX :)

Hi,

You tube is your friend when trying to learn how to fly the 737NG, and these videos are FREE. Start there and begin to read the manuals, you will not become proficient overnight.... Buy if you stick with it, you'll get there.

A lot of folks would say learn IFR in a trainer aircraft. I'm one of them...

However if you're stubborn and like to get in over your head fly the NGX. Fastest way is to go to YouTube.

I would learn:

FMC programming.

Basics of IFR flight

High altitude aerodynamics

Systems. How to start NGX.

Use a flight planner like simbrief.com to understand all of the above. And start with short hops.

And in your spare time I would watch ALL of the University of North Dakota (UND) training videos.

Flying the NGX is a steep learning curve if you don't have the basics.

It will ignite a passion to learn and that's all it takes to fly any aircraft.

Mephic - thanks so much for the advice.  I just checked out Rob Machado's web site and it looks like a wonderful learning resource.  I will check out FS2Crew too.  Many thanks!

Mike - thanks to you too.  i'll scour Youtube tonight...

fullmetal02 - I am willing to learn IFR on more simple GA aircraft.  I'm in no big rush. I have the A2A C172.  Should I use the resources Mike and Mephic mentioned but stick to the 172 until I have a better understanding of navigation and IFR procedures?
