Recommended Linux distro for X-Plane

Hey, you can try Ubuntu 13.10 or LMDE Petra.  I personally prefer LMDE but I may switch to Ubuntu and use the LXDE or XFCE Gui as these are lightweight.  avoid using Compiz when running XPX.

 

And there are quite a few of them you would like to check distrowatch.com .

Can't install the XP10 demo on it...maybe because it is on a virtual machine. . .

Yes, Virtualbox etc. are good for testing but not for running 3D apps.

 

If you like it, install it in a partition or maybe have a look at Puppy. Although I've never tried that, I've heard that you could run live 3D games without install...

Yeah puppy is great, But I am not sure all libraries maybe supported. He can try porteus. Hey you sure Virtualbox does not allow 3d apps ?

Clicking on or running the command-line as root on the extracted XP10 installer does nothing in a virtualized Ubuntu 13.10 environment. Tried a few other Linux virtual environments. Not come across any good how-tos for installing the XP 10 demo.

What I would suggest you is do the following.

 

open up a second terminal and run the following :

 

tail -f /var/log/syslog  , this will show you runtime stuff.   then execute X-planedemo from the other terminal and see what the log shows up. It may not work properly because of the virtualization not getting full 3d acceleration , but I could be wrong as I don't run it under a VM.

 

Just try the above and let us know.  BTW have you selected 3d acceleration in Virtualbox ? the max vram to my knowledge is 128mb available under Virtualbox , and that is not good for XPX.

There it will not work, As it is saying the Gallium driver and that is the one that does not have acceleration. you need to install your GPU drivers and then try.

 

But before that run this command and post the output.
