GO Around vid does not work..........?

Which one? There are two...wait a minute, are you talking about my videos or Jaime's video?

Go-around is in the TOGA mode. As you retract the flaps, the bugged speed will move. If you don't move the flaps, the airplane won't accelerate. That's why you have no trend vector, the plane is maintaining the bugged speed.

Once you hit your acceleration altitude, your clean up is quick. It's not a lengthy process at all. Don't pause.

Just like a takeoff, you call for the next flap setting when you reach the existing flap setting. ie You call for F1 at F5 bug.

A few other thoughts:

Ralph, thanks for the great videos. You have given new life to the thread and spurred some good discussions

For everyone:

One big "gotcha" is low-level level-offs.

For example, in Seattle ILS16L. The Missed Approach has you climb to TEBNE 2000B, then climbing to 5000 for MILLT. If you are in TOGA and you get to 2000 before TEBNE, the plane will exit TOGA and go in to ALT HOLD. Your thrust levers will be at the same position you left them at on the G/A, so you might find yourself accelerating quite rapidly. Get the A/T on sooner rather than later and save yourself a headache.

"But, Matt," some of you will say, "I always do an autoland and an auto-go-around. I don't have to worry about that."

Good for you. But you're not simulating real life. 99.9% of the approaches I've flown are hand-flown at some point.

Another point: I said a go-around happens pretty quickly. That doesn't mean it's rushed, it just doesn't take that much time. It's basically a take-off and a SID, if you think about it.

Matt, thanks for your comments.

Based on your flaps 5 to flaps 1 to flaps up comment, I think I will modify my tutorials to reflect that. In my go around in the video I felt my acceleration from flaps 15 to 5 was pretty weak, so I engaged climb power...but based on your comment, I should just continue the flap retraction schedule  to UP and then go for climb power (if I have not reached my altitude yet). I have some things on my plate to get to first, so this update won't be until next week. And while it is a  minor one (in my opinion) I want it to be as accurate as possible, so thanks for your input.

>Good for you. But you're not simulating real life. 99.9% of the approaches I've flown are hand-flown at some point.

Yes I am aware of that...my main purpose in flying the PMDG 737NGX is to keep my IFR skills up so I use the autopilot and let my brain do the thinking as I manage the MCP panel...so as a result, I don't care about things like the weather, ATC talking to me, etc...I just load up the FMC and go fly.

That being said, I do think YOUR comments are vital for everyone to read and learn from (including me) so while my flying may not be real world, we all still want to hear from you when you feel it necessary to chime in...!!!

That wasn't directed at you, just some of the simmers who believe that autoland is the norm. Sorry, that sounded pretty rude as I had written it.

Well, I fit that statement in some cases, so I pleaded guilty lol...

Try clearing your browser cache...I deleted the original part II video and uploaded it again...let me know if this doesn't fix the play issue for you. I am able to play it on YouTube.

Sorry, same message. I tried here and went direct to YouTube and I see same message, "deleted by user". Tried 3 browsers, no luck. First video works alright.

Just an FYI -- I have removed these two videos from my YouTube account so the links won't work anymore.

After PMing with Matt (spin737), he made some good, real world suggestions re how he and his company executes go arounds. Staying within the Boeing FCOM and the FCTM, I am in the process of updating both of these videos to make them as accurate as possible for us flight simmers.

I will let you all know when they are finished and uploaded to my YouTube account. This should happen within the next 24 hours.

Thanks...

Due to comments and suggestions from Matt (Spin737) and Jaime, I took the time to do a re-make of these two videos. Working within the guidelines of the Boeing FCOM1 and the FCTM (Flight Crew Training Manual), Matt and I held discussions on what could be improved in this two part series of the 737NGX Go Around procedure. I would say about 20% of it has changed for ver 2 just to give you an idea.

For those of you who may not want to watch them again, here are the changes:

PART I GROUND SCHOOL CHANGES

(1) Based on a comment from Jaime, I have removed the slide talking about the flap retract 'Safe Zone' and 'Unsafe Zone' on the speed tape within the PFD. This slide caused some confusion so I have removed it.

(2) Flap retraction and when to call for LVL CHG climb power. In Ver 1 I called for LVL CHG before completing full flaps up. In Ver 2 I complete flap retraction first and then call for LVL CHG climb power.

PART II SIMULATOR DEMONSTRATION CHANGES

(1) At 400' AGL I call for LNAV vs HDG SEL (Matt thought that if the hold is in the route, then most pilots would fly to it using LNAV and not select HDG SEL first and then switch over to LNAV once on your way towards the hold as I did in ver 1).

(2) Flap retraction all the way to clean up before calling for LVL CHG climb power.

(3) Holding speed is now set to flaps UP maneuvering speed and not 240 as the CDU suggests. While the CDU recommends a holding speed, the FCTM has a full page on holding speeds and recommends flaps UP as the 'standard' holding speed. So, this ver 2 reflects that.

The results of both of these tutorials being updated is that they are now more accurate for all of us flight simmers. Thanks again to Matt and Jaime.
