February 15, 200521 yr HiI love the upgrade and fps at least on my system was unaffected. What I did notice was the blue edge lights and the green taxi lights are much larger than what I was using before. The first thing I thought of doing was editing the RUNWAY_LIGHTS_XXXX_XXXX in the config. Never noticed before but these lights seem to be unaffected by my changes. So my question is: What is the name of the bitmap used for these? Can anyone make a recommendation on others for me to try?Hope I gave enough info. Any help would be much appreciated.RegardsBob G
February 15, 200521 yr Bob,I think it is HALO.BMP that gives the lights that effect. Try replacing it with the original (you DID make a backup?) :-) Graeme Butler
February 15, 200521 yr Ok will give it a shot.I looked at the halo file but no color, so I guess the color comes from somewhere else when processed. Well of course I backed em up. I learned the hard way one time :DThanks againBob
February 16, 200521 yr >>Can anyone make a recommendation on others for me to>try?I use Chris Willis' freeware FS Sky World package. Among other things it offers a few different runway/taxi lights. In my opinion superior to anything out there. In my opinion AE's lights are too big and fuzzy.Michael J.WinXP-Home SP2,AMD64 3500+,Abit AV8,Radeon X800Pro,36GB Raptor,1GB PC3200,Audigy 2 Michael J.
February 16, 200521 yr On a related note, does anyone know what file in the library is the one that make the lights in FS9 appear as if they were star shaped? Like sparkley...I can't really think of the right term, but I've searched the library high and low, but I can't find that file. Dan
February 16, 200521 yr I am having the same problem. I was taxing out to the active at SFO on my way to ORD and I noticed the taxiway edge lights (blu), taxiway center line lights (grn), and the runway edge lights (wht) were larger than usual. I thought I was transported in a new version of PAC-MAN!!! I was waiting for my A320s' engine sound to change to "wacka wacka wacka...." (the sound of PAC-MAN) eating the yellow pellets!!! Attached is a pic, disregard the plane, but notice the large PAC-MAN type pellets on the taxiway center line? ANY HELP????Other than that, GREAT JOB CHRIS, KEEP UP THE AWESOME WORK AND DEDICATION TO THIS GREAT HOBBY!Thanks.....
February 16, 200521 yr The bitmap is named 'halo.bmp' and is found in the FS9Texture directory. As for the appearance, these bitmap images are colored blue by the sim for taxiway edge lighting. The original color of the bitmap was created by me, and represents runway edge lighting, centerline, touchdown zone, Runway End Identifier Lights (REILs) and the "rabbit" sequenced strobe lights for MALSR, ALSF, ODAL, and several international approach lighting configurations. The appearance of runway lighting is a matter of opinion and is open to several different interpretations. As a pilot, I find the appearance of the lights supplied with AEU to be the most realistic. If you are more accustomed to simulated flight, Mr. Willis' lights might be more appealing. The difference, I think, comes from the way cameras capture lights in photography. If you don't do any real world flying, you might be lead to believe that the appearances that lights take on in photographs is the way to go. Believe it or not, cameras DO lie. :) In real life, runway lights will sparkle only because of their relative brightness to their surroundings. The sparkle comes from your eye, atmospheric conditions between you and the light, the aircraft windscreen, contamination such as water on the windscreen, etc. The bright contrast that I have modeled into the AEU lights is meant to simulate this. If you are in a dark enough room, your eye might actually interpret the bright glow just as it would in a real airplane! You might actually feel that you see a sparkle. The sparkling bitmaps, and others are all very beautiful, but they are only realistic from the perspective that they have already been filtered by a camera, or an "eye" of some sort.My representation is raw and unfiltered, and is therefore the real-deal. :-beerchugHope this helps.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/107026.jpg
February 16, 200521 yr >If you are more accustomed to simulated>flight, Mr. Willis' lights might be more appealing.Chris,Frankly I find this statement offensive to Mr. Willis. I am pilot too and found his runway lights superior to yours because my real life flying experience does not include big fuzzy blobs no matter what's your scoop on 'raw and unfiltered'. Maybe it is my eyes or brain that process lights differently. But guess what - to this date I have not found better city lights than yours (those at full intensity). So please acknowledge that not everyone has monopoly for being always the best - this is the nature of this hobby - priorities and tastes change daily whenever better things come along.By the way, interestingly you mentioned the camera 'lie' effect. Believe it or not your lights look to me precisely like the photographs you are talking about (and the way I saw lights before my myopic vision was corrected by Lasik operation) and Willis' lights look like what my brain sees now. ;-)Michael J.WinXP-Home SP2,AMD64 3500+,Abit AV8,Radeon X800Pro,36GB Raptor,1GB PC3200,Audigy 2 Michael J.
February 16, 200521 yr Any word on whether you get a microstutter prior to landing with these textures? And many thanks for your contributions Chris
February 16, 200521 yr Michael,You seem a little unhappy here Michael. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion... real pilot, or not. I'm saying that I see things differently, and wouldn't even dream of bing the "best" among the many talented people in this crowd. That includes Mr. Willis who has made many, many great contributions to this hobby. It is my hope that at least a few people out there will find my lights superior in some way (that way, I won't have to patch). EDIT:And another thing... :) All I'm saying is that I did make some sort of effort, that was based in some sort of logic. I really don't mean to offend anyone, including you Michael. I appreciate your taking the time to offer such constructive comments.
February 16, 200521 yr I did not think my take on the edge lights would have such an impact. I just thought they were too big and it was nothing more than personal taste. I found them glaring and obtrusive. I did fly earlier in my life out of Van Nuys airport but I never remember the edge lights being as glaring as represented in AE7, so consequently I and will look for alternatives that appeal to me. No offense intended as I am enjoying the other eye candy represented with this addon. Thanks for all who contributed their two cents.Bob G
February 16, 200521 yr No problem Bob, I'm glad you enjoy AEU. As for the lights, I just wanted to point out that I did make an effort, and do understand that not everyone will like them. There are, for that matter, folks who don't like AEU at all. I understand that too. :)
February 16, 200521 yr "There are, for that matter, folks who don't like AEU at all. I understand that too."You're very understanding, Chris, but I don't agree. I can't see how anyone wouldn't love you enhancement packages. I hope to see more of them.Enjoying AE7 immensely, rightseat
February 16, 200521 yr Thank you Righteat; I tremendously enjoy making these upgrades and sharing them with the rest of you. :-beerchug
February 16, 200521 yr Hi Chris,When I first installed AEU7 and loaded up the Sim atmy default airport I spent at least five minutes infront of the terminal building admiring the reflections.Great job Chris, please keep churning them out, I loveit.Regards to you and your beautiful family. __ Catmar
