Misty Fjords..... Wow!!!

Featured Replies

I started reading about Misty Fjords when it first started appearing in this forum, but I had little interest in it mainly because 99% of my flying was at 30,000+ feet on auotpilot. A week or so ago I read a post about Alaska flying, and the next thing I knew, I was downloading Misty Fjords and the Aerosoft Beaver. The last 2 days I have been adding free upgrades to both the Misty Fjords scenery and the Beaver and flying all over the place. I added a package this morning to Misty Fjords which is free to download on a web site called Misty Moorings. http://www.mistymoorings.com/office/index.phpNow after installing the free files, I fire up FS9 and go to a lodge in the woods, complete with a storage shed for a Red Stagger-wing Beech. At that point, the Beech starts up and taxis past me to this little dirt strip next to the lodge and after a brief runup, takes off. The scenery is so real looking , I almost fell out of my chair. There are lodges scatter thoughout this scenery that you can search for, landing on frozen lakes in the winter, in order to locate the lodge. Today I landed next to a lodge and in order to get there I had to fly about 4 miles up a river valley between 2 three thousand foot mountains. I am doing 90% of my flying now, by hand. I found a panel for the Beaver ( another great free download) with an autopilot , but I hardly use it. The boredowm factor is zero!!! Apparently on this Misty Moorings site, new scenery and utilities for the Misty Moorings Scenery are being constantly added. The have files to add to FS Nav so that you can find the various Cabins and lodges and cruise ship routes as you are flying around. Oh, I almost forgot, as I was landing today, a flock of Geese flew by. Unreal!!! :)

Yepp! Misty Fjords is my best investment for a very long time.I bought it the day it came out, and have been flying there since. And with all the grear addons from Misty Moorings....it's just great!!And if you like to join the Alaskan Air travel company....Just go here http://www.freewebs.com/alaskanairtravel/ and join the rest of us MF freaks :)Johnny"I'LL BE BACK"[div align=center]http://www.avsim.com/hangar/fly/josve/pmdg.jpg ][/div

Yes, a whole new world when flying VFR. It's like discovering Flight Simulator again for the first time. Highly suggest this to anyone is hitting that "wall" of what to fly or where to fly.

I agree with everything said above. However.....I really hope Holger's next scenery will be in an area where I do not have a 1000ft ceiling 90% of the time. I am a real weather fetishist and 9 times out of 10 the weather there prohibits taking off. However that in a way really prolounges the fun to fly in this scenery as you really have to wait for the right time :-). Yesterday they had etremely nice weather there. You could pay a visit to all those glaciers...Alex

Misty fjords have got it

Hmmmm, I fly with Alaskan Winds group (in Misty Fjords) and I must say that we've had our share of bad weather. However, we just fly anyway; that's the fun of GA flying. And when that 20 kt wind kicks you right toward the side of a mountain (which you can't see for the rain) the pucker factor kicks right in, instanter. :D

Where would I go to purchase Misty Fjords? Sounds like something I need to have since I am an Alaskan at heart even though I no longer live there.Jim

I parked at one of the Misty Moorings docks around the bend from Ketchikan, and here comes my old FS2004 Beaver taxiing in and parking there (actually ran into me, I will have to move down). I had completely forgotten about the scenery designers asking to use it. It was guite a thrill.Speaking of Beavers, I got the Aerosoft one but I guess I like mine better. Theirs has a superior exterior but I was disappointed in the VC. Now that I have a new computer I have started tweaking it and adding some more interior detail, plus with a finer resolution monitor some annoying mistakes showed up, and they have been fixed.Hope someone will model the Ketchikan airport. There isn't much there right now. Supposedly there is an Alaskan Winds building available but I haven't been able to find the download yet.

Is the Misty Fjords package a complete terrain mesh for all of Alaska or just a certain part of it?

Just a part of it. About the same size as Switzerland.

Hi all,in the name of the Misty Fjords teams, thank you very much everyone for the nice feedback!!! ;-)Alex's point is valid: if you fly by the book weather is often an issue, especially in winter. However, whenever I load a flight in the area and ActiveSky presents me with stacks of clouds, I just turn off ATC and take off. Exploring the narrow valleys beneath low-level clouds is a great adrenaline push and breaking through a layer of fog or clouds to see the mountaintops peeking out above is often breathtaking. The funny thing is that I only noticed these amazing weather patterns after Misty Fjords was published because 95% of developing and testing was done with pre-set clear weather ;-)I'd like to emphasize that Misty Fjords is not "just" a terrain mesh, it's a complete replacement of the default landscape. Anyone interested can download the manual, which includes a complete list of featuers: http://secure.simmarket.com/online/fsaddon...F_BW_Manual.pdf Or, if you're more into visual assessments, check out the user-contributed movies in this post: http://forums.simflight.com/viewtopic.php?t=31915 .Also, my newer freeware files (Glacier Bay, North Cascades, Bella Coola, Columbia River Gorge, Canadian Rockies), while smaller in extent and with less features, use similar methods so they should give you an idea what to expect.Cheers, Holger

Yesterday I flew a preplanned flight that I found on the Misty Moorings site called the Maze. This was absolutely the most fun that I have ever had flying MSFS. It starts out at Ketchikan Airport and following the included FSNav file, and also a FS9 flight plan, off I went. I discovered a couple of cabins on the way, but the most interesting part was flying in this river gorge for miles, with mountains on both my left and right side, and then having to decide at each Y in the gorge, which way to go. The last few miles of one of the gorges saw a gradual rise in the altitude of the river, and I had to climb a couple of thousand feet , from about 500 feet to clear the pass at the top. My Active Sky was creating these great cloud patterns which would sometimes hide the mountains on each side. It really got the adrenaline going at times. Together with the excellent flying characteristics of the Aersoft Beaver, it was a flight that I will remember for a long time. In fact, I think I will fly it again soon. http://www.mistymoorings.com/maze/maze.phphttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/107689.jpg

You can find the Alaskan Winds Ketchikan scenery at the Alaskan Winds site. It's the FS2002 scenery that has been tweaked for FS9 and works fine. It has a af'2 file included.EnjoyJoe W

Not this winter though. We are thinking about marketing Portland as a winter destination during el nino years. We are well into two weeks of absolutley flawless, 55 degree, sunny weather!
